Not sure what Ian is planning and didn't want to hijack his thread so here is my simple step up. Just a pair of partridge 977 1:6 ratio trannies in a cobbled together oak surround with walnut top. Oak was left overs from a " brownie points " job for 'er indoors and the walnut from a guitar project.

bit bored so made up some leads and soldered one end straight on to the trannies. inky black silence unless music is playing.

Phono sockets arrived today, started to drill the holes and the two halves broke in two, back to the drawing board. This time I am using two pieces of left over oak nosing I had made for the stairs in my last house 16 years ago. These will be the sides routed to take a 2mm stainless plate that my mate is water jet cnc machining the holes for the trannies. Ends will be wood, not sure what yet, but hopefully won't split when drilled for the phono sockets
