Thought I would give some feedback on this 20 cd box set, from Grateful Dead.
It covers 71,72, 73 and all concerts were in St Louisville.
The musical content is very good and some of their old favourites are given a different and very refreshing presentation.
It sounds to me, they were moving on from their Psychodelic bluesy sound and into a more laid-back country, jazz-rock, sound with a good dose of noodling from Garcia's guitar with support from Keith Godchaux on keyboards and the classically trained Phil Lesh on Bass.

So the recordings were originally live two-track recordings from Betty Cantnor and
they do a good job of cleaning up these live recordings and remastering them on HDCD.

I have an HDCD digital reader on my player and it might be contributing to what I hear as a very smooth, slightly laid-back presentation.
Then I remembered I have a sense control on my Restek dac which seems to work like a treble and bass control in practice.
Overall I would say the recording quality is ok to good and considering these were all original live concert recordings, a great job overall. However, you are not going to get studio playback with these recordings.

The package and presentation are superb, making these box sets a very desirable collectors series.
I will endeavour to upload some photo's of the package. IMG20230606122038.jpg IMG20230606122249~5.jpg IMG20230606122123~2.jpg IMG20230606122051.jpg IMG20230606122153~2.jpg IMG20230606122217~2.jpg IMG20230606122201~2.jpg

I would like to come back on the St Louisville box set regarding the sound quality. I have played the whole 20 cd set through for the 2nd time and my thoughts on the recording quality are better than I originally thought.
It seems the recording process called Plangent, has the effect of reducing distortion whilst bringing out the musical presentation, whilst also bringing the singers to the fore.

The presentation softens what you would hear if it was a live radio broadcast but gives more layering of the instruments and vocal presentation.

I would say, having got used to this type of recording process, that it's a very clever and enjoyable presentation.
It also allows for you to turn the volume up bringing the dynamics through without extra distortion.

Consequently having adjusted to this clever way of remastering I have to conclude the sound playback is very good.
It also allows for a tweak on the tone control to a positive effect if you want a bit more or less of Garcia's guitar, or vocals.

There is also a vinyl set on dead.net.
I wanted to mention this as I know some of you have more preference for vinyl.

If you're buying from dead.net again there's nearly always discount codes floating around on Steve Hoffman forums. I just got $25 off and postage reduced from $75 to $25 using a code from this thread...

https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/thre...3-17-cd-box-set-due-6-30-2023.1174166/page-20

Bit of a lottery as codes seem to come and go, but always worth a shot.
I found myself hopelessly looking at the, Here Comes the Sunshine box set these past few weeks.
In the end, the inevitable happened, and I succumbed.
Now I'm another ££££.... quid out of pocket. 😝

its the TD 1500 , replaced my original TD160 (y)
Of course, got my numbers mixed up. How are you finding it, The tonearm is an impressively solid looking thing.
I do like German engineering. My systems all German, except the speakers, which I think we do better.
