Anyone got really efficient speakers?

Anyone got anything in the 100's DBw? I am wondering if a CDP that puts out 3 volts (quite a lot at the moment) would be able to drive them on it's own.

Just an experiment.

:nerd:

Why bothering which expensive and mega-power electronics if you start building a system around INEFFICIENT speakers?

Interesting question, but I suspect there'll be problems due to output impedance and current capability.

The CD player is designed to connect to a high impedance load (~20kOhm + I think), rather than say an 8 Ohm speaker load, and would normally only deliver tiny currents. My understanding of electronics is crap so I'm guessing here, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that connecting a CD player directly to a loudspeaker would damage it's output stage.

(Oh, and I know this is pedantic, but it's dB/W not DBw...)

I would fully expect it to sound crap. I just wanted to try it.
For my sins I'm practically a professional pedant (physicist)

. I'm also therefore all for trying stuff too

, but possibly not if it might kill a CD player? Like I said my electronics is crap so I don't know, but I wouldn't blindly try it until someone who knows what they're talking about (i.e. not me!) says it'll be OK.

I wonder if you could make a CD player to directly drive really efficient speakers though?

Shropshire Borders,
You could use a cdp with a 3v output to power pro type PA or instrument speakers...

My bass bin has an efficiency of somewhere around 108dB/w, and I have heard of speakers up to 111!

Ah but here is the beuty of my plan. The output stage of the CD player will likely explode and then I can rid the world of these horrible devices

In all honesty the output impedance will be in the middle tens for a normal CDP 50ish, thats probably down to the lack of feedback employed in the circuit, but of course thats just me guessing. I know that some of the valve designs I've done have had 3 ohm impedance and my 303's are way down in the 0.02 ohm range.

Yeah, that sounds the right sort of figure to me.
