Thanks for the replies!

I own a Tabriz Ti, linn basik and rega 300. I can't decide whether to use one of them on it, spend money upgrading one of them or just sell them all and buy an sme IV or then I saw the benesch and thought it would look amazing on the gyro but I've no idea how it would sound! Any advice would be greatly received. Thanks. Ben

Ha ha! Yes I know that but if you are dropping £800 on an arm it might be better playing it safe?!

Hi Ben, what cartridge(s) do you have or are considering? I've heard both SME 4 as well as WB Act 0.5 on a Gyrodec and both performed and sounded equally superb, with their partenered/different cartridges. As a deciding factor price-wise, a used example of an Act 0.5 would/should be around 60% of an equivalent SME 4. Cheers.

In a way Ben. My intention was to buy a once in a lifetime TT purchase and I demo'd at length a range of TTs including the Gyro and Orbe. No doubt both are excellent examples of the Art and have a wonderful soundstage but I thought both were a tad dry compared with the fluidity of the Roksan. You might though usefully PM Tons of Fun who I think runs a Tabriz on a Gyro.

Edit: Sorry I see Ed has replied.

Hi again Ben, the SME had a Benze-Micro Wood and Act 0.5 a Benze-Micro Glider, but exact models not known. Some years ago I went for a demo of an Orbe with Act 2.0 arm which was fitted with an Ortofon OM40 Gold that sounded & worked really great, so one of the current Ortofon moving magnets (eg. Bronze, Black etc) should likely go very well with an Act 0.5, as of course should one of Goldring's latest MM's. Cheers, K.

Thanks again everyone.

The Roksan is certainly a fine deck and I've been very happy with it. This all came about because a friend of mine was talking about a transcriptor. This got me looking at them and then the Gyrodec and before you know it I've got one sitting in front of me! Although I haven't heard it yet as I've sent the base away to get resprayed. I'm looking forward to setting it up though. I just thought I'd ask about arms as I think its worth putting a good arm on it but its good to hear that a Tabriz, r300 or WB would all be good.

I guess its all about trying a few out and seeing what suits me best.

Thanks for all your input. Cheers. Ben

Just to throw another 9inch spanner in the works, the Audio Arm One/Two are in budget, fit the same Rega mount and are seriously good arms too. You don't have to be an Audio Note fan either- they are just bloody good arms judged by the standards of what is available at the price.

Don't give me more choices!!! I want to narrow it down!!!

i think half the problem is that I haven't even heard of a lot of the arms. I hadn't heard of Wilson benesch until 4days ago! Audio note is new to me also! I've got a lot to learn but I look forward to it! :)

With respect Ben,you'd only get an Illustrious if it were second hand and a good deal.

Hi Emma royd

Ive seen sub a £1000 sme v go on eBay which are a lot more expensive than the IV so surely a IV for £800 isn't completely unrealistic?!

edit - should have read that more closely. Now I'm going to have to google 'illustrious' to find out what ER is talking about!

Origin live!

I'm a big fan, and all my experiences with the brand and Mark Baker (owner and designer) have been very pleasant and the results have exceeded expectations. Google at your own peril... ;-)
