His Peavey Classic 30 guitar amplifier is on the blink, intermittently, with "random click pop crackle noises". He (and I) suspect the o/p valves: me because although dodgy electrolytics can cause similar symptoms, it's usually a "hard fault" rather than an intermittent one.
The sales blurb for this product says it contains 3 off ECC83 and 4 off EL84. I suspect there are ECC83s one each for preamp, spring reverb drive & return, phase splitter. Also that the o/p stage is push-pull with 2 o/p valves in parallel in both the push & pull departments.
He also says he's beginning to think the amplifier is too loud for his purposes. I think that if he can identify the EL84s which are paralleled with the others he could remove them to reduce power o/p. How about changing the preamp ECC83 for an ECC81?
Apart from the usual safety warning (which I have already issued and am sure that he is smart enough to heed), has anyone any observations?
