Are these identical apart from cabinet size? And thus the only sonic differences being things like scale and bass depth, plus sensitivity? Subjectively are there differences? I'd love to try a pair of AN-Es, but fear they wouldn't pass WAF inspection... :(

Thats pretty much it, both share that Audionote house sound, I used to have J's and have heard a couple of different sets of E's and love them.

The E's are bigger than you think so wifey may not approve, they also need decent amps preferably valve.

You will find their sound very different to what you have now.

IMHO Js have cleaner midrange, less affected by quite coloured AN bass (very prominent on Es)

but than some people love it big and booming

both fun speakers

For the basic models (AN-E/LX, AN-J/LX, SPe versions of both, HEMP versions of both) drive units are the same. Crossovers and cabinet dimensions are different and the AN-E models are a little more sensitive, but only by 1dB or so. Both have the same kind of 'Audio Note(UK)' sound, so if you like the one, it's probable you'll like the other.

There is no 'HE' version of the AN-J because the HE bass drivers are physically too large for the J cabinet unfortunately. There are also no 'Signature' (outboard crossover) versions of the AN-J.

Contrary to popular belief, both play happily with pretty much any amplification you wish to use them with. There are quite a few happy Naim users who have E's and Js, and the combination works surprisingly well.

Martin.

WAF for Js vs Es is not necessarily a given. Comparing a pair of Snell Js on their stands next to a pair of Audionote Es on stands was not really any better WAF-wise as they sit at the same height and you just have more fugly metal speaker stand on the Js compared to less metal and more nice wood on the Es.

Wot he says above.

Js have more of a mid bass hump and sound tighter amd punchier, more 'rock n roll' relatively speaking, whilst weight, scale, extension, and midrange clarity are better in the Es IMHO. I have a suspicion that Js are rather easier to drive though YMMV etc.

For those who have heard both, is there a very noticeable difference in the presentation between J's and E's, given that E's go 8Hz lower than J's. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

They are a lot more similar than they are different. The Js have a lovely slight bloom to the bass, which makes up for their not going as deep, and in some ways is slightly preferable, as long as you don't listen to organ music. I probably miss my Js more than my Es, if anything.

Agree with that, the pair of J Spe (in macassar ebony) I had in my medium sized room was for me the nicer overall sound and looked pretty cool sat on top of a pair of Partington broadside stands.

no. the only difference is that Es has more bass thanks to larger cabs and different port tuning. it's a similar, relaxed and rather sweet sound. it really depends what music you want these for - if not bass heavy than Js for clearer low mids.

difference between Es and Js are pretty much as differences between tannoy berkeley and cheviot. it's the same sound, just a bass extension. and that affects a mid presentation too.
