Hi Folks,

I have had a look on the web but thought I would ask here as I am after some B&C compression drivers, in particular the DE10 for tweeter duties and the DE750 for mids.

Any impressions on the quality of these units would be interesting to hear about as well as places to source them at a decent price in the UK. I have found a few places but I thought some of you may be able to point me to places that you have used and have had good experiences with.

Thanks

Si.

i have no experience with these but i used DE250 for a while in my room - it's certainly the cheapest entry into a quite serious sound of compression drivers, very even, smooth and relaxed. i had a bit of a problem with an overall sound signature of a polyimide diaphragm - too polite/mellow for my taste - unless my crossover was overdamped. i would really love to hear it with one of the better diaphragms developed for JBL/radian etc....

still no brainer when it comes to price/performance ratio, one of the best on the market (much better than beyma/BMS/.... other competition).

I have a pair of DE750's - the 2" comps. I havent tried them yet but they have a good reputation in pro audio. I bought them used from a 'Soundman' in Guildford who, as he handed them over, said they were the best sounding comps in the business. They will be married to a pair of wood multicell waveguides (the same ones Amdismal uses/used). For comparison I can try them against a pair of BMS 4592 but not in the same horn as the location bolts are not in the same place. The BMSs are fitted with ex-Speedysteve conicals.

Thanks for your replies folks, its a toss up between the B&C DE750 and the BMS 4592 ND but there is obviously a price difference and from what I read the BMS is better but by how much? This maybe a matter of trying them both.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get the B&C's in the UK?

Cheers Si.

How low they go?
The B&C 2"? Not that low. 500 quoted min freq resp, recommended X/O 800Hz.

The BMS 4596 mids are good for 300 or very close to it, on the right horn. They ran my JBL2482's very close indeed -fag paper in it really.

Could not keep both and Jack made me an offer for them, hence them being on 'those' conicals now.

The DE10 are quoted at 2.5KHz and above. They are 'only' $44 in the good old US of A. So ~£44 then:)

Anyone who claims any driver is "the best in the business" is blowing smoke up your chimney. That said have tried a B&C 8" driver in a 150 Hz tractrix horn and I really, really like what I hear.

Furthermore, I know people who have used them and speak highly of the quality of B&C comp drivers. Mostly I hear good stuff about their phenolic 1" exit drivers.

best

Mind that B&C has very conservative data on their website - for example they claim B&C DE250 to have 1000-18000 range with 1600hz recommended crossover frequency. So it's only the measurements on a particular horn that would give you a correct answer what can they do.

I run it in my room crossed at 880hz 4th order in geddes OSWG and it sounded just good, not stressed or whatsoever with amps ranging from 2w to 50w per channel. According to B&C papers, I would have blown them straight away!

I believe B&C measurements are valid for use in pro audio with enormous powers.

That said, I really loved 4592 (just a mid driver /not coax/ - if that's the right number) in david haigner beta horns. Amazing performance, not sure if DE250 with phenolic diaphragm can sound as fast and transient...

you get what you pay for........ most of the time. BMS 4592 ND mid driver is very good as stated by Steve and Gordan, I run mine from 350Hz - 2Khz on auto tech 200Hz tractrix. Not cheap but if you want a good result then dig deep.
