Hope this is ok to post here as not strictly hifi but certainly music-related ...
Since retirement I've got involved in a Bach festival in Surrey which celebrates its 70th annversary next weekend (10-12 June).
It's a fabulous programme at the heart of which is the St Matthew Passion, performed using pretty much the size of forces he would have had available in Leipzig in the 1730s, with nine singers and a small group of chamber performers divided into two 'orchestras'.
It's normally held in Tilford, near Farnham, but this year there's a problem with the roof at Tilford church, so it has been moved south to Grayshott which is closer to Hindhead and Hazelmere. (Makes it far easier to get to for the Sussex contingent at least).
The performers are pretty serious baroque specialists and the singers an international bunch including Joanne Lunn and Charles Daniels.
Anyway I would encourage anyone who fancies hearing an authentic baroque performance, with all the trappings of a friendly village festival that England does so well (writing as a Scot here), to give this a look-in.
