I bought a used pair of Mk2 242s recently. After converting them to aktive I found one lower bass driver to be silent. Can't tell for sure whether it was playing before the conversion. When swapping the connectors on the crossover board I had noticed the bass wires to be a tad short - definitely shorter than in the other speaker.

Before I schlepp the speaker to a dealer (I don't even have a go-to Linn dealer) I would like to take a multimeter and check the driver and wiring myself. But how do I get inside the cabinet and access the (lower) bass driver? Not keen on trying, damaging the veneer while erring... Google search for a service manual was negative.

Anybody got a hint for me please? Or a service document?
Are the 242 still being serviced by Linn?

Simply because part of my reply was private.

To remove a 242 bass driver first remove the metal grille. It is a tight push fit into the trim ring and will need a thin, pointed tool inserted into the grille’s perforation to lever gently outwards.

Remove the trim ring. It is held in position by a moulded flange which fits into a corresponding slot machined into the cabinet. Bend it slightly inwards to release it. The material is quite stiff and you may need to use a thin blade carefully inserted between it and the cabinet first to move it.

Remove the six bolts that secure the drive unit. The unit may stick in which case use a small screwdriver or similar inserted into a bolt hole to gain leverage.

If working alone then laying the loudspeaker on its back will allow you to rest the drive unit on the front of the cabinet. If working with an assistant they may take the weight of the drive unit.

Reverse above to refit.

Note the grille has small flanges which locate it into corresponding indents in the trim ring. These do sometimes resist relocation and may require bending fractionally to fit.
