Hi. Can you suggest what the best speaker design is best suited to give deep, low but tight bass in a small space? By small I will say, 4m x 4m. Are we looking at a small ported standmount or larger driver in a sealed box? Discuss.

I think the best way to get great bass in a small space is with a pair of small subs such as REL Tzeros with small standmounts.

I agree.

It's tight with a £1k budget....but some second hand original LS50s, or Q Acoustics Concept 20s/3020i, along with a small Sub or two from BK might be doable.

Sixty or more years ago I recall that corner enclosures were a thing, mostly home-made or kit designs. Today, as long as you can position them optimally then some slim floorstanders might work well, as 4 metres is not a bad dimension. If the room is literally square then other problems might arise, as square rooms are far from ideal.

I was gonna suggest those actually. Incredible bottom end on those for their size. I heard those years ago and asked the guy where the sub was!!

4m x 4m is bigger than any music room I’ve had since 1980. I have used many floor standers of various types and sizes very successfully, bass-wise, so there is a big choice out there, depending on your preferences, room arrangements and budget. My current speakers are Audio Physic Tempo 35 in a 3.95 x 2.85m room.

The room is square - not good. As to small speakers with a decent bass the Kef Meta reference 1 may do the job if you have £7k burning a hole in your pocker (reviewd this month in Hifi World). At real world prices though the Totem's mentioned above are worth a listen - but second hand if they are not too big something like the IMF super compact (3 way), or B&W DM2A may be to your liking (or not)
