My 2.5 year-old Alfa 147 broke down today. Was only doing about 5mph. But it's fecked. Had to be towed home by the AA man. Then it has to make its way to a garage (tomorrow)for an estimate :nerves:and (expensive) repairs.

Early prognosis suggests it was the Cam Belt Tensioner which was at fault. Either way, it could be very expensive to repair. AA warranty will cover up to £500. Alfa24 month manufacturers warranty expired in Feb.

Bloody feckin pain in the arse as I havea wedding to go to on Tuesday (in Portsmouth) and I have to somehow make my way from here to Peterborough on Thursday!!!

Thats bad news Jezzer and i fear i'm about to make it worse :Upset:

If its done valve damage i fear it will cost much more than £500. No way of telling til the heads removed and you can check how many valves are bent.

Yup...

At least I wasn't doing 70mph when it happened. Hopefully only a couple of bent valves...

Sigh... I know it's going to be money. Maybe I should've kept the Beemer...

Still, I'm going to give Alfa a call first thing tomorrow. A cam belt shouldn't fail this early in its life. Checked the book and it isn't due for a change until 72k. My car's only done 23! :Upset:

Even if the tensioner failed at idle speed (ie about 850rpm) you could still bend all 16 valves so speed isn't much of an issue i'm afraid. How old is the car since age also determines the timing belt intervals as well as mileage?

Worst case scenario - how much will it cost me???

Thats really shit luck fella - i feel for you. On such a ralatively new car and with only 23k on the clock i'd lodge a firm complaint with Alfa romeo uk (as long as you have full service history of course). No way should the tensioner have failed imho.

Good luck

Did you get a tick list with the last service report? It should indicate that the belts etc were checked and you were informed of any work required.

I bought the car 2nd hand. HPI and AA cleared. The service history shows a stamp... but not an Alfa garage stampthough...

Who would've thought? a two year old car with less than 25k miles on the clock...

Looking at the service book, the engineer doesn't even have to check visually the condition of the timing belt until the 36k service!

Correct - there should be no reason to assume any wear or failure at 10k on an almost new car.

Well, at lesat that's in my favour when I call Alfa up tomorrow.

It's crazy! I downsize my hifi and my car so I can bump up my savings and now I have to deal with this shit!

At least I have savings to pay for the repairs if Alfa don't cough up...

I've had my Hyundai for a year and a half now and it's been a nightmare. 3no fault founds on warranty claims,(£65 cost each time) new clutch (four attempts to get the right parts), new discs and pads (three attempts to get the right parts), during one service, three attempts to get the right air filter, and someone clipped the bumper when it was in, and what did Hyudai customer service say? It's not our fault, it's the dealers fault. I hope they feck off back to Korea...

Hyundai!? I thought they offer a five year warranty with their cars!

At the moment, I'm in a state of limbo as the dealer phones the manufacturer.

Manufacturer says they will fix the fault. Dealer has doubts (as out of warranty). Dealer speaking to manufacturer and will get back to me....
