I’ve got hold of one of these.
Optical and co-ax out into my DAC are fine but no joy with RCA/line out.
Because this is the model with twin Wolfson WM8740 chips, I’ve got it into my head that I simply have to get it working so that I can hear first hand how good (or not) the onboard DAC is.
Does anyone have first hand experience of this CD player and able to give an opinion as to whether it’s something to be pursued?
If yes, I’m thinking about sending it to a local repairer and put a max of £50 on the repair.

Honest answer? Not worth it. I think when discontinued, they were £79. It would be better to invest your £50 on another used working one if you really want to try it.

Also, an engineer would charge more than £50 just to look at it.

The twin Wolfson dac chips are great, but a cheap power supply makes this machine sound very 2d and a bit thin IIRC. I modified mine with Teddyregs and a PFM flea, and that improved it no end, but the transport failed, so I bought a Dacmagic Azur and moved my mods over to that (same dac chips).

Well worth repairing but, as mentioned, the problem is that the repair will probably cost you a lot more than it's currently worth, unless you're handy with a soldering iron yourself.

Thanks.
I’d be happy to give it a go with a soldering iron. The unit stands me in very little, so if I completely messed it up then I wouldn’t be much out of pocket.
My problem, though, is not knowing where to start in terms of what needs replacing.
I can see this ending up being recycled.

Identifying the problem is generally the biggest cost especially on surface mount PCB’s
