I recently moved into the world of headphones, not having a headphone out socket on my amp I have purchased a headphone amp . The issue now is that in order to change between sources involves fumbling around behind the hi fi rack to swap interconnects which frankly is a pain. Am I right in thinking I can use the record out from my amp to feed the Headphone amp and just turn the speakers down?

As the record out should be full line level and presuming your headphone amp has its own volume control then yes you can use it that way . Only limitation would be you could not listen to the speakers with another source while using the headphones but as it will normally only be one or the other then it will work .
