My mum has up to£7,500 to spend on a 2nd hand motor to replace her not so old (v plate) Peugeot 306 which seems tohave developedquite a few (potentially dangerous) problems of late.

Needs to be an automatic and about the same size as the Peugeot. It's a shame about the 306 as it's a great car to drive - great chassis and good grip.

Thought about the mk 5 Golf (can't go wrong with a Golf?). Megane was also considered.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Golfs are very good cars, but not ultimately as reliable as they would have you believe... My money would be on a Civic or Corolla, Spec and reliability are hard to touch IMO

Seems like buying Japanese is the way to go.

Will avoid the Megane for sure. The last generation Civic really is a mum's car... unlike the new one which is like a space ship...

I love my Mum's current shape Toyota Corolla - quick and easy to drive (apart from when you put it in a hedge

).

it has had no problems in 3 or 4 (?) years now either.

My being a poor musician and already having a Land Rover, I couldn't afford much but I reckon I picked up the bargain of the fookin' century yesterday. A one owner (admittedly elderly :lmao:)Rover 416, 1999 model, with the Honda engine and auto gearbox, 13,000 miles, full Rover main dealer service history, 11 months' MOT and 8 months' road tax......for a grand. The thing is showroom condition inside & out and drives like new. Who gives a shit if it's an old man's car? I've got a nearly newmotor with Honda mechanics for peanuts. Chuffed!

er whats wrong with a Focus? You get much more for your money than you do with Golfs, and they came in the same place (more or less) in the recent satisfaction survey of 2-3yr old cars

Injector, an excellent deal there! Where did you find it?

Rory, nowt wrong with the Focus at all. That's one to consider. I wonder if a current generation one (with an auto box)can be bought within budget?

The Mazda 3 was also recommended.

I was in Tesco and saw it on the 'for sale' noticeboard. Thought I'd have a look as it was very local and was shocked to be fair! I couldn't get to the cash machine quick enough, gave him a £500 deposit and got the rest out next day. Rover prices have hitrock bottomnow and it's a brand worth looking at IMO if you're after a cheap car - lots of bang for the buck as they say.

Picard, I would have thought a Galaxy Class starship would be the only choice...

My mum likes the look of the Toyota Corolla:

If it's a 2nd car, do not look only for purchase price. What are the running costs?

I was recently looking for a small city car for my wife and indeed have found that a bigger Rover like this 416 would go for less than a small car of the same age.

But then, the Ford Fiesta is hardly beatable for running costs.

What about the insurance, service for this Rover 416?
