Is there a CD player that can compete with a rega Saturn for this sort of money that is a front loader?

Nothing mushy or soft sounding and I'm not interested in a DAC and another box. I like that the up and at em sound of the Rega but how I'd like to house my set up would mean it may not be practical. Ie inside a wooden unit with a shelf above it.

Bugger , meant this to be in 2 channel debate.

Hi Steve, its a shame you cant stretch your budget as I will(unfortunately) be listing my T+A CDP soon as I have to raise some funds for buying a house.

The sound is definitely what you would call detailed but still very musical and not at all soft and mushy but also never fatiguing.

It retailed at 3K new and is built like a tank and has various filters you can switch between to tailor the sound(or you can bypass them) and remote control. I would be looking for £750 delivered though.

Let me know if you think you can stretch to that though.

You may try Consonance CDP 2.2 MK2. RCA outs are using 6H30P supertube - sound is analogue like but I wouldn't call it soft. There are also XLR outputs - without tube. This makes the sound a bit more detailed but not that live. This player is really in the 3K category by its sound. Worth a try.

Talk 3.1b or equivalent - paid a bit more for mine but last one went cheap and can be upgraded with an external psu. Really good quite like a ballsy Rega - but has odd habit of dropping out.

Roksan Caspian was pretty good, livelier than the Saturn with a deeper sound - safe bet very well put together. Left field would be a Densen, a bit different soundwise though.

Tried an AstinTrew but eventually couldn't get on with it.

It's a bit over budget Steve, but that Accuphase CDP in the classifieds looks sexual.

Yeah that Accuphase looks lovely. I'd love it. I don't want to spend more than 500 quid. I'd stretch myself for that if I could afford but I cant. Seller is a real gent too.

Any previous £1000-2000 DVD player will do the job as required. Coat etc .... I'll get. And you will have £300-400 left over.

Don't you find the read and seek times on old DVD players to be a pain in the arse? It would drive me mad.

That is exactly why I stopped using them. I'd be finding a way to afford the Accuphase. Safe as houses investment, even for a box swapper.

It won't. I'd gladly demonstrate my 1000 pounds Arcam DVD player against the Rega. If you couldn't hear the improvements I'd be very surprised. Plus DVD players make the Rega seem quick in operation!

Ive had a think about the Accu. Might see what I can do money wise later.
