I am currently in very straightened financial circumstances and know that buying anything at the moment is not going to happen . Yet still I see something I have wanted for ages and the itch starts .

I have always wanted to hear and own the old Merdian 105 Mono Block amps I do not fully understand why , I have seen them quite a few times but never heard them on the end of anything. But something about the way they look and the really small footprint with that quite generous output has always made me tempted.

Seen another two sets on e-bay and the old itch has started so please could someone tell me am I wrongly infatuated or are these really quite a decent set of mono blocks . What do they sound like and can you still buy a pair that are not going to straight away send you to the repair shop .

One set has been fiddled with with replacement caps and other internals which may well be a huge improvement but really I would prefer an original set just so I can try them .

Nah, they're really crap, not worth the effort, Behringer do it much better and cheaper.

That'll be 100€ for the consultation, thank you!

Might be fun for a few listening sessions Andrew but can't really see that they'll hold a candle to your current kit long term if you like what that does. I know where you're coming from though. Box lust is a bugger.

Thanks Bob I had already thought of that but really scarted in case they are very good then the itch just gets even worse. Still your right I should just bite the bullet and find someone with a set and at least hear them with luck as has been suggested they may well be crap then this compulsion can subside till the the next item of lust appears (do not get me started on Lintek Integrated)

Meridian 105s are excellent as with all Meridian gear.

Just be aware they likely won't be working to full potential after 30+years so look for a cosmetically clean set and prepare for some DIY.

Not difficult though and enjoyable.

They don't really have a sound of their own if working correctly.

I loved mine! wish I'd not sold them they were mint too. Like that man said They might not be at there best, but I had some components replaced by a pal of mine, sounded poo to start with, but after a month or so, they really tightened up.

Lust or love?, just as with women, lust is, often, short term, love long term, it all depends upon your individual makeup.

Then, you only live once, perhaps, so, try them all?

Music or boxes?

Well always music first but there is nothing wrong with having a soft spot for the boxes as well . I am not suggesting dumbing down to an MP3 player just looking to fulfil a long held desire for what I have always viewed as a piece of desirable equipment that to date i have never heard .

Buy at the right price, satisfy your lust and then sell if you feel she's let you down.

Actually there's a business opportunity here for someone.

Remember the meme, "If it floats, flies or fucks, rent it", to which could be added, "reproduces music".

So, a source from which one could rent from the vast world of hifi reproduction.

How much could you be in for here? £100? I'd say buy 'n' try. I have been impressed by my own 100 series Meridian gear. BUT: It should cost peanuts, cosmetics should be tolerable, and a unit with a re-cap is a VERY GOOD IDEA especially if it comes in at the same price. The original caps weren't that flash TBH, likely you'll get a better amp if this has been done, and less visits to the repair shop subsequently. If there's a chance get the lid off and check the internals for signs of baking before purchase then better still; they do run at a sufficient temperature to cause browning of the boards.

No, it won't compare to a modern Krell but it will make music never-the-less :^

Thanks all but the costs of a pair of 105 seems to be the other side of £200 and much more for recapped ones so not something you can just buy and try . Think a case of keep waiting look for a bargain then give it a try . By the way mine is nothing like a modern Krell but is the original KSA 50 over 30+ years old and in my view it sounds so much better than the current Krell real honest class A with grunt and lots of heat .
