Hello there

I'm not entirely new to the 'wam. One of my more maverick holograms called Vanity is also a member here. I think there is a place for me as a trader here on the 'wam, albeit in a different capacity to the others. I am a courier. My revised website (gtidistribution.co.uk) should be up and running some time next week so now seems a good time to start.

Nobody, apart from couriers themselves, seems to know what a courier is or does. I have heard parcel company drivers describe themselves as couriers. They most certainly are not, neither are the firms they work for. The dictionary defines courier as “a messenger, usually travelling in haste”; parcel drivers only suit the second half of that description.

A couriers price is calculated on his vehicle size and the jobs mileage: parcel companies charge on size, weight and quantity. Professional couriers hardly ever damage anything, in the unlikely event they do, they have Goods in Transit insurance, minimum cover £10,0000.

Basically I want to point out that if you are sending something big or heavy or more than 1 item over a relatively short distance then a courier could possibly do it as cheaply as a parcel company, certainly better. I don't know the statistics but I would guess that any genuine courier would also be be 100 -1000 times less likely to damage anything.

Advantages go beyond price and risk of damage. Heavy items that require a two-man lift are no problem, so long as there's someone at each end to give the driver a hand. A consignment can be collected from business premises in the afternoon and delivered to the consignee's home the same evening when he's finished work. If you're doing a swap, the courier's return journey would be a fraction of the lead price. If a couple of you got together you could consolidate your transportation and get a bespoke service possibly for little or no more than the combined costs of your individual parcels.

Courier delivery is a completely different ballgame to parcels delivery. It costs about the same to send a parcel either 50 or 250 miles by a parcel service, Courier delivery over 250 miles is about 3.5 times as much as 50 miles. Some parcel carriers charge 6 x as much to send half a dozen parcels to the same destination but it costs 1 x as much with a courier. You may want to take extra insurance with a parcel company, you shouldn't have to with a courier.

I would guess that a parcel service is still probably a better option for something like 90% - 95% of all transactions. Pharos Parcel is the parcel service of choice for many wammers - and deservedly so. I have nearly 10 years experience in nextday parcels and feel sufficiently qualified to to endorse Pharos for quite tangible reasons.

All I've got to do now is persuade you that GTI are your best choice if you want a courier, especially when we are in Cumbria and a typical job might be from one side of the M25 to the other.

I am here to promote my own courier company, not the others but, if you Google “courier” in your area you are almost certain to find at least one local courier and about half a dozen others with 0845 numbers pretending to be local (hopefully it will take a little while before they cotton on to the virtually local numbers now available). I encourage you to ring both but suggest you don't commit to either until you've spoken to us.

- - - Updated - - -

I am trying to sell my service now and that was a very long intro so I hope somebody with a box to send is still reading.

REASONS WHY WAMMERS SHOULD CONSIDER GTI AS THEIR COURIER

All courier companies sub-contract work out to owner drivers. Genuinely local couriers subbie out some of their work, 0800/0845 numbers most or all of it. For comparison, consider GTI Distribution to have elements of both.

  • All couriers companies sub-contract work, nearly all opt for the cheapest quote and pocket the difference. I am a member here, I have met some of you. I really really do not want to be ended on this site by using a plonker who does your job badly and embarrasses me. I will get you the best available.
  • I realise most of you move your stuff as private individuals. Some owner/drivers are not VAT registered so, whenever it is cost effective and possible, I can choose one of those and get him to charge you directly.
  • £. I am already a lot cheaper than big names and slightly cheaper than any of the immediate competitors that I've compared. My margins are already narrow and I can't always guarantee a wammer discount. Every enquiry from a wammer will get a spot price which will be below my usual rate whenever the job allows it.
  • I talk in terms of small vans because that's what we use. If you need a bigger vehicle for a job (up to 7.5tonne) I'll get one for you, priced just as competitively.
  • GTI are integrated with both of the the principal courier networks. Not quite unique but most of our competitors are only registered on one or the other, likewise the available couriers. We have more than two thousand accredited professional couriers across the UK to call upon.
  • European collections and deliveries. About a third of the courier vans that cross the channel have empty space at least the size of a pallet. If you job is not urgent, I might be able to co-load your consignment on one of those vans. Prices fluctuate wildly and Pharos would always be able to send an average size parcel for a lot less.
  • I kid you not: from Cumbria I really can organise a courier for you, wherever you are in the UK, as though I was in your home town. I operate in precisely the same way as other courier companies, I'm just straight about how the system works and where my base is.

I am often faced with this scenario..I have something that i have sold, but is a large item or heavy, i dont have the carton, so i cannot send it safely, does your company delivery items carefully without original packaging?

Guaranteeing that no damage will occur? If so what sort of price would something located in SW Birmingham cost to delivery to Central London?
Hi John. A very good example to use here.

The cost to send a van from, say, Solihull to central London (approx 111 miles) would be £95 + VAT + congestion charge if appropriate. I may be able to shave up to a tenner off the price if it wasn't time-critical, especially if it was going to a private address in London. I can never guarantee that though - every day is different for a courier.

Most of the time your consignment gets a dedicated van all to itself. If there is a co-load it is never more than 1 consignment. Regarding guaranteeing no damage: the GIT insurer won't pay a claim unless reasonable care is taken with the item. That does not mean original packaging - an oversized box with crumpled newspaper sheets for packing is OK if done with common sense. There are lots of big plastic bags available like bin-liners you can put over the amp before putting it in the box and packing it The onus is still on the sender but the terms "reasonable care" and "common sense" can't be transcended by a courier in the same way a parcel carrier can. Every courier worth his salt carries blankets or similar in his van and if I can't get a decent courier I won't send one at all that day; I know what a wammers priority is (and let you know of course).

In short, if the sender takes reasonable care himself, his consignment will never be damaged unless the courier has a RTA. I will PM you later today when I'm back from the road.

articulate and interesting stuff, I'll certainly use you should the need arise. Parcel carriers "insurance" isnt worth the paper its written on. (not that it is!)

Best of luck with your venture, theres a serious gap for someone that actually cares about how you receive your goods.

Ditto. Especially after the supposed 'reliable' UPS just smashed my beloved Mastersound Amp and the couldn't care less attitude was very annoying to say the least. :grrr:

Interesting. My new speakers arrived today, courtesy of one of the major parcel companies. Due to the size and weight of my "parcel" I had to help the driver to get them out of the van.

My speakers were fine: two huge boxes, shrink-wrapped onto a pallet at the factory. the whole shooting match weighed 100 kg and it was going nowhere.

The rest of the stuff in the van, however:  . Parcels were just strewn about in the back of a Luton; many were damaged and a couple were squashed to the point of being completely fucked. No care had been taken arranging the contents, and stuff had clearly been flying around in transit. Nasty! :(

I use UPS daily, not one single issue and I send a "lot" of packages out. The OP will be of use when sending medium to larger packages as say a pair of speakers could not be trusted to 95% of the big boys. Its the law of averages with these companies, every so often everyone will come a cropper with a mis-handled package that gets dented or dropped, overall they are all as good/bad as each other, the OP rates seem reasonable, I have put him down for anything I get that can be couriered from A to B beyond the scope of UPS.

I've had parcel courier drivers who were good and took care loading/unloading and others who were complete animals, lobbing my parcels about even when I was standing right there! What happens in a big depot doesn't bear thinking about. I've blithely sent fragile kit all over the world with no problem but am under no illusion that it wasn't blind luck :nerves:

To the OP, good to know there is an alternative :^

….................A bit more clarification is needed here, I think.

Essentially a courier performs direct delivery. There are two main purposes of direct delivery which aren't quite mutually exclusive but nearly so (with the exception of documents, which can be both): speed and special care items. Obviously HiFi is in the latter category. You wouldn't send a picture or rare vase or quality antique with a courier, no matter good he was, without making some effort to protect it and the same applies to HiFi components.

In the event, a courier would take care with your stuff and probably wouldn't mark it. But would any member here want to despatch his stuff on “probably”?. To expect a guaranteed delivery on unprotected delicate items isn't a fallacy it's fantasy.

I'm sorry to give such a robust answer John but if I said anything else I'd be setting myself up for a fall and that fall would happen quickly.

Alan. You didn't say if you sent your amp through Pharos Parcel. They do care and they have a direct line to UPS. They view their role pretty much as like insurance broker (my words, not theirs!) and they genuinely work hard on your behalf when the need arises. I have no idea how their prices compare to shipping directly with UPS but, unless you have an account with UPS, I'm prepared to bet 10p that Pharos would actually be cheaper.

I've nearly 10 years experience in parcels and I intend to write a 2 page thesis about how it all works, benefits and disadvantages of large and small etc then start a thread with it. All I need is some spare time!!

When I finally get round to that, the uninitiated will understand why I recommend Pharos so resolutely when I have no financial incentive in doing so.

Your comment is interesting too Mr Vissarionovich.

To my knowledge there are now only 3 big companies that will deliver outside the standard parcel remit: TNT, Nightfreight & Tuffnells and all of those companies will only do b2b work and then only with a minimum spend of £1,000 per month (possibly exception of TNT if booked through the likes of interparcel).

If there is a pallet delivery company out there (with a covered hub) delivering to private addresses then might be a better and cheaper way for wammers to send speakers.

This sounds good.

And have an extra star for being able to market yourself properly, a rare commodity.

I don't think I'm very good at marketing myself at all Mark, at least not in this day and age. I haven't the foggiest idea how to bullsh*t :nup:

I'm absolutely knocked out by all the positive comments. Thank you: I appreciate them very much.

I also very much appreciate the business of my first 2 customers from the wam. Brave people to immediately take up a new concept but I don't think they need worry. Their goods are being collected on monday for delivery later that day.

You can book NightFreight via Parcelmonkey for large items
Sounds good.

Do they definitely go to private addresses though? If they do, should be way cheaper than me over distance work.

Even if they don't you might get round that by having them collect or deliver at your place of work
