Honestly - the drivers, crossovers and cabinets of the modern Prestige range are in a different league. Some of the early reds, golds etc were very nice, but the nowhere/nothing models now go for silly money because they look a bit like the better models.

Very much agree. The newer drivers are massively better than the old soft and fluffy Golds or Reds.

im sure just changing the caps on the so called fluffy sounding drivers will bring them up to a high spec although its totally right about cabinets

Nope the golds are not good speakers, even in better cabs. You have to get the tweeter fixed and upgrade the x/over and they still vibrate out of control in the bass.

Have you heard 3828s vs a modern DC? Or are your posts just guesswork?

no its guesswork but i have heard the berkeleys with the hpd and it's a hard speaker to beat in a lot of ways for the money, i must say the bass is not the tightest by far but they are such a majestic speaker hear, you canot compare a 10" to a 15 it's not right

So you've heard a better driver in the same (rotten) cabinet, and that's it? FFS.

i have 15" and 12" golds, i find them better than the hpd, but only with the crossovers sorted, but steve mvj, who lives just up the road from me has sterlings, i would have these off him in a breath if he ever sells, fantastic tannoys, i would also have johns if he was closer

There is a precedent for the price, silly as it is. Rarity. That range with the later drivers (they did this with the very last Cheviots too) sounded more accurate than their HPD based predecessors. Also that box is

somewhat better built and finished than the later boxes. Metal badges, nicer grills etc. All else considered though I would tend towards a modern speaker for that money.

The Berkeley cabinet is just simple and minimally braced chipboard, neat enough but clearly built to a price. The cabinets that SMEagol had and then sold used to be mine so I do know that of which I speak.

The HPD and later drivers have the ribs on the back of the cone and various other changes to the pre-HPD versions so they do perform differently in the bass. I've never heard it suggested anywhere that the '80s ceramic magnet drivers are better than anything made before or after them though.

The speakers in that auction are tidy but £2k?! Please.

Lol, Berkeley cabinets have one use - they act as boxes for the drivers so they don't get damaged while transporting them. After that, they become firewood.
