I'm looking at some new KT88's for my Icon Stereo 40MKIII . . . I've had a set of Gold Lions in there for about 1000hrs, two have become suspect, talking and reading the web seems to indicate I am not the first to experience a short life on the 88GL's????

So, looking for replacements, had bad experience on quad sets 'Treasures' and Psvane T, both returned faulty. Smarting from that aggravation, so I put the original supplied standard Shuguang KT88 back, all sweetness and light having also rolled to advantage ONS Sylvanias 6SN7 and 6SL7, the combination is very pleasant.

Feeling a bit wary, then I saw on fleBay Cryo treated Shuguang 'VAT KT88'from the US, clamming considerable improvement over a standard Shuguang valves and at a fair price? To good to be true . . . any one have any experience of Cryo treated valves, or any other recommendations?

Young Kevin speaks the truth, but holds back a bit.

Cryo treatment of valves is a total fuckwitting joke.

It is a method through which to try and relieve people of money, in return for which they get absolutely nothing.

Complete and utter bollocks.

With all respect to anyone selling this shit, I have a few minor qualifications in physics. If you can provide any proper evidence as to the benefits, I would be extremely interested. Not least, because it would contradict virtually all known physics.

For those considering buying. Save your money. It's total unproven shit and does nothing, apart from possibly shortening the life of tubes.

Just buy decent ones and ignore this total tossery.

Richard,

Your beating about the bush is rather trying. Why not tell us what you really think about it.

(By the way, I completely agree, it can't do anything except possibly shorten valve life.)

I try, dear boy, I try.

Simple and definitive answer. It will and can make absolutely no difference whatsoever.

Serge and I disagree on a number of things that I believe can or might make a difference.

I have some minor technical qualifications that might be relevant, but I also have two ears and brain inbetween them. Cryo treatment cannot possibly have any effect whatsoever, apart from possibly making some metallic components more brittle.

Subjective reports of cryo improvements in valves might yet have some basis, if not for the effects of a chilly dunking then for the extra level of tube selection before (and I presume after) said dunking. It could be down to selection of better or more consistent samples of production, possibly better matched as well, and with the really flakey tubes eliminated as they wouldn't survive the process. All of these would provide measurable and audible benefits.

Of course such benefits would be difficult to sell without extra foo so why not chuck in a bit to milk the gullible? Personally I am amazed by the condensation of hyper-crystalline exotic metal amalgams on me anodes, and the elimiation of digital hash and better transmission of micro details resulting.

For many years, the weak point of any valve is the Pin to Glass seal.(different expansion rates metal/glass) I think with such a huge thermal shock of the Cryro process I would prefer stay clear of it. Unless the process is done on just the metal prior to encapsulating and evacuating the valve. I see little point.
