This is Philomena Cunk at the AudioOrganixx loudspeaker factory in Scunthorpe, where they make organic speakers for people with more money than sense. I’m talking with Anna Daptur from the Human Resources department. So tell me Anna about this speaker here which you call the “Mordred”.
“Yes – all our products are called after Arthurian legend, it’s a convention in our industry like Exalibur, Merlin, Guinevere etc. You have to use Arthurian names. And you have to be very vague about the specifications to avoid technical arguments. So we use our own measurement system, like using furlongs per fortnight for speed of response. This is our most hi-fi product – the Mordred. The “fi” in “hi-fi” is a Greek letter meaning quality. It has to have a really powerful amplifier driving it capable of a full 8 ohms”.
“So you call this a high-end speaker? Why is that?”
“Well as you can see, all speakers have a high end and a low end. We place our binding posts at the high end of the speaker so the electrons can drop organically down to the drivers using gravity. If it were the wrong way up it would sound slow. So we always mark the “high end” on our products in case people are confused”.
“So my last question is about the materials you use – wood for the box and paper for the cones. So in fact your speakers are made from trees. In that case, why can’t trees themselves speak?”
