I've currently got a Musical Fidelity A3 24 bit cd player which I'm beginning to think is the weak link my little system. I wonder if it would be a step forward to use this as a transport by adding a separate MF A3 24 96k/192k dac? How good a dac is the latter please??

I have no experience of the DAC you are interested in but know the player and it is a solid performer. You will be swapping slight flavours at most. What is it that you feel is currently lacking and that you want to change?

Off the top of my head I would suggest either a non-oversampling route if you are sure it is source related, or summat else in the chain?

Agree with the above in that most swaps are going to just change to flavour ever so slightly, or not even noticeably.

Some of the NOS dacs are quit characterful so you might want to try one.

To achieve an improvement, rather than minor differences in presentation, you'll need to move a bit beyond the MF DAC (although not a bad DAC, by any means). I'd suggest a look at a Leema Elements DAC, or possibly the T&A DAC8, if you have the budget.

Of course, you'll get much more of a change by moving to different speakers. But I suspect that you like your current system, but you just want to add a little more (refinement perhaps?) without changing the overall character too greatly?

I am currently modding an a3.2 after much deliberation over which cd to upgrade to, I think it was the best solution cost wise, and predicting it will be well worth it when done, pm me if you are interested as the mods are quite simple.
