I'm of an age when Ziggy came to my ears at the tender age of 8 (thanks to brother in law). I love most of his stuff and of course, ZSATSFM rates hugely for all the right reasons.

However....

This evening, I spun up Aladdin San and listened the whole way through. It is sublime. Musically more polished, more sophisticated lyrics and even more insight into the mind of Bowie methinks.

Whats your opinion ? Is this his finest work or do you prefer something else ? (The Next Day ?)

I think you'll find if you did a poll Steve, Hunky Dory would win, having said that as time has gone by Aladdin Sane is a very close second for me.

Like 'em both, but if I HAD to choose just one, it would be Aladdin Sane :^

Pure genius ;-)

Aladdin Sane has two of the best, and most divergent, Bowie tracks ever: Time, and Lady Grinning Soul.

Those two show the incredible range he had and I think this album was his best ever.

Time, is a masterpiece. Dark, beautifully crafted and musically stunning. Lady Grinning Soul pulls at the heart like few other Bowie tracks. Superbly composed and sung beautifully.

Plus, there's Let's Spend the Night Together, Jean Genie and Panic in Detroit on the same album.

Brilliant x 10 frankly. There are other good ones, but IMHO this is Bowie at his absolute peak.

Yeh, I did think of Hunky Dory as well, but for me Panic in Detroit and Watch that man were clinchers. Love it.

Turning out two, count them, two decades of music that help define the 70's & 80's, its just impossible to choose one album.

Its a series of albums that I'm seriously struggling to think of anyone who has equaled.

Hard choice, I agree. Hunky Dory and Spiders from Mars are stunning, but the sheer range on Aladdin Sane is what tips the balance for me. Poetry and music combined. Plus, some of his best ever material.

Agreed, though a lot of that leaves me a bit 'meh'. Nevertheless, a brilliant writer and musician who has come up with some defining moments in music.

Right after 'Sane he released Pin Ups an album of covers which I didn't appreciate at the time but I love it today.

For an artist full of ideas strange he made a cover album at that time.

Diamond Dogs:- 1984 was for me, the masterpiece of that album. ( the dance of the ever circling skeletal family was a trip too far for me)

And yes, classic cover. What an artist

I'm struggling to think of ANY artist that has made three "masterpieces" (IMHO) on the trot - Hunky/Ziggy/Aladdin :notworthy:
