No, but the first one I remember that made me realise CD could sound good in its own right was a Linn CD of The Sixteen (Harry Christophers) doing Membra Jesu Nostri by Diethrich Buxtehude. Until then, CD was something you bought only when the music wasn't available on vinyl.

EDIT tbh, it still is, but I can expect decent quality of it

Cupid & Psyche - Scritti Politti. My brother bought a Technics system with a Philips CD player. He got this and Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls. Bought from Kendals in Manchester! 1985! He'd have been 18, and working for a new store called NEXT where he walked around dressed like Crockett from Miami Vice.

Haha...that was also among my handful of first CDs with the Brian Ferry.

I think the first CD I played was Roxy Music Avalon when the shop (where I worked on Saturdays) got its first batch of CD players.

There was also an all digital Denon CD with extracts from their classical catalogue - they’d released PCM masters on LP for several years. And some sort of Philips sampler CD, the content of which escapes me now.

Dire Straits Brothers in Arms can’t have been far behind.
