Simply buy a 78 player for your father.

I've been getting up out of my chair and crossing the living room every 3 minutes or so all evening.

I'm going to ache in the morning...

That covers aerobic exercise, if you want some power lifting come to Scalford, walk into the carpark and ask 'Does any one need a hand?'

He seemed to enjoy it... must not forget that it's not about the kit, it's about the music

Forgot to add that, watching a Hollywood film of bomb disposal where they are working out which wire to cut has nothing on watching a partially sighted 91-year old, with no glasses, poor lighting and a shaky hand attempt to align a tonearm that he can't keep still with a record that he can't see and lower the stylus with a mechanism he also can't see.

Ah well, at least the felt will keep the stylus clean...

What a lovely video of your Dad enjoying his music. Love it.

Who is playing on the first version. Sounds like Johnny Hodges on Alto Sax. Is it early Ellington?

Lovely :D

Alternatively, get yourself a HUGE valve amp and spend a few days deciding exactly where to put it.

Heck, I've got 23kg tranny monoblocks, and they're enough of a workout!

I know what you mean! I've recently completely re-racked, going from a pair of AER 5s to a pair of Atacama Equinox XLs. I'd forgotten just how much fun it was lifting a 28kg power amp, 24kg surround amp & 16kg CD player.

At least each of the the 42kg speakers could be shuffled across the carpet rather than needing holiding in front of my with outstretched arms.

At least they're all too heavy for the missus to shift out of the living room :)

That is the best video! You don't get that level of enjoyment watching Avatar with the folks. Well done for even having a TT capable of playing 78's.

Lovely vid. Feeling a bit choked up now.
It might not all be about the kit, but matching the kit to the music, and getting the old rituals going such as crossing the room to flip the record, is probably going the extra mile and making the memory connection that much more meaningful.

That evening we not only started playing his 78's, but he also discovered how to search for "big band" on radio 2 on the iPlayer app on his iPad, which also cheered him up no end too.

Got to admit the pre-loved Rega RP78 was a recent eBay purchase after I failed to get his Dancette player going. I decided that it was more important to listen to music on the evenings I spend with my father than it was for him to watch me fail to fix a record player...

When I called him last night he happily told me that he'd managed to play Skyliner by Geraldo and his Orchestra. With his vision being so impaired, operating a manual turntable is quite a challenge, so I was well impressed!

Fantastic video,i'm wondering how long it's been since he last heard those tunes, and what memories are flooding back to him as he listens with obvious delight.Brilliant to watch that though,i bet he could tell some stories.
