So I hooked up my DVD player through my DAC using a digital TOSLINK cable. It sounds superb as a CD player but watching a DVD comes with an inaudible soundtrack due to a "skipping sound". If I connect the DVD player using a standard RCA output cable to a line in socket on my amp the DVD audio plays fine.

I am not especially bothered by this but I would like to know why this might be.

I'm guessing that the DVD player is set to output 'bitstream' rather than PCM.

If you go through the players menu and change the audio output setting to PCM it should work.

Basically, your DVD has an AC3 soundtrack. Your DAC doesn't understand AC3. By setting the output to PCM it converts the 5.1 AC3 to standard stereo PCM which the DAC can cope with.
