Popped in to see the fine chaps at LCE in Lincoln this morning to have a brief play with a full frame. The following pictures were using the same lens (Canon 17-40 F4L) shot on ISO800, no processing, no exposure compensation and with the cameras' own AWB.

It was more an exercise to see what sort of coverage I get using a cropped sensor vs the FF jobbie, obviously the 5D's performance should be better as it's a more advanced camera.

Anyway, here they are:

I also had a good play with a 70-200L but I'm still no convinced it works, for what I'd use it for, on a cropped sensor. I'm also thinking the ideal combination is a FF with a 24-105L which could pretty much cover 90% of my needs. :)

That is an ideal combo, almost the perfect single lens system.

It's not just about full-frame vs crop sensor.

I use an EOD 50D and to be honest, the results are generally not as good as from an EOS 5D MkI. Though they should be. There are significant differences in the autofocus for a start.

It's also very dependent on whether you shoot RAW or use in-camera processing.

All that said, and although it means a few of my lenses will be landfill, I am seriously looking at swapping the 50D for a MkI 5D.

Wish, but need to think it through. I have Sigma 10-20mm and Canon 70-200, neither of which are any good for full frame Have a superb Cano 24-58 EF, but that would leave me with one lens!

Anyway, at the moment, I'm trying to increase funds, rather than increase toys.

Bloody good buy that, mind you.

This is the crux of it - even the 40D has a newer focussing system than the 5D Mk1, a later Digic processor too, but the 5D will take better pictures because of that lovely big sensor. It simply gathers more 'stuff'.

The problem I have is that on a FF my 17-40 would become slightly redundant - I don't need a lens that wide and it would be a waste to have such a nice bit of glass, and seldom use it. I could of course sell it and put the money towards a 24-105 which as TK said would be a lovely combination. :)

<I'm talking myself into this aren't I> :D

still wish I had my 5d, with the shorty forty for company, all I would need.

Clicked on the eBay link just as it finished, maybe just as well. Nice price for someone.

The 24-70 f/2.8L is also worth a look , especially now that there's a Mk2 version out. I used the Mk1 version on a 5D2 for several years and loved the combination - for me I would prefer to have the extra stop than IS on a shortish lens - IS is more beneficial on lenses like the 70-200 upwards.
