Experience of repairing a Technics SE A3?

Hi!

I was given curatorship of a pair of Mangers to store until the owner sold them and in return was rewarded by the gift of a fancy Technics SE A3 amp. Great bit of kit. Class A. Very sexy looking.

Last year some crazy guy consulted me about noise cancellation for outside gigs in the Balearics. It was rather a fun project but in the course of wanting to generate some noise I looked at what looked like a 200 Watt amp - 200 watts of Class A - and unfortunately it did not like a 4 ohm load.

So I discovered that there are only two sorts of A3 amps - those with their output transistors blown and those which will blow their transistors! Replacement trannies are well documented and I've bought a set of the beasties but the problem is disassembling the boards and getting them out.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

As I don't usually use an amplifier much above 1/2 watt, when repaired those meter needles aren't going to move much . . . but it's rather a heavy paperweight to have sitting around not working.

Best wishes

David P
