Has anyone built a dedicated music / movie room in the garden . Caroline and I are starting to look at property as hopefully my flat will soon complete . Rather then making the new house fit the system I mentioned the idea of a music room but in the garden . She seemed very keen on that idea for some reason

Yes most definitely
Good cus the kit would get wet otherwise 😂
That’s a good idea. Obviously the size of garden will potentially dictate how big and what material you will use to build it. Not forgetting potential planning permission issues.
Before I found our house with the benefit of an extra room, I did think of a solid log cabin with sound and insulation proofing. It was about 6x5m internally and would have cost 23k done probably. Sounds a lot but going from a three bed to four bed house costs the same.
If you don’t need loads of bedrooms and can find a nice house with a good size garden, it’s a great idea. I was very close to it.

@Lee M converted a detached garage I seem to remember, and very nice it is too.

This will most likely be away from the main body of the house . I don't mind rolling up my sleeves Les and watch someone else build it .

This was the Garden I nearly got but the house fell through. The sun house you can see was going to be the location for the room 😊
Would have been great but the house did need a lot of work.

I believe the general rule of thumb for additions to a property (attached or stand alone) are <30m² & single storey doesn't need planning permission provided it doesn't use up more than 1/3rd of the garden. However if it's of timber construction & single storey then it's classed as a temporary building so the regs are a bit more flexible.
If I was you I'd look at bungalows as they normally sit on good sized plots.

Thank John . I don't intend to buy a timber summer house which can be relatively cheap and then customise it. I have a few friends in the trade so I am thinking solid construction .

Roy Gregory built one before moving over to France.

That garden looked big and I thought our 3/4 acres was reasonable.

If it was truly outside, with perhaps cover for the gear, then at least you'd have no room modes to deal with.

Sure there haven a few ‘proper’ builds from members here and over on PFM. There was someone over on PFM posted copious photographs over a period of months with a great build but that was a few years back. I’d be rolling up the sleeves making the tea and keeping well away from any tools 😀

@DUVET @Sumdumgi We converted our garage, its not attached to the bungalow but a few ft away. I was looking into getting a big log cabin type built but it was cheaper and more beneficial over all to do the garage. Overall its perfect for our needs. The main objective was a room for everyone for all year round usage.

There are so many companies now doing the prefab panelled rooms that it's easy to get a decent sounding room which is easy to maintain and looks good.

Thanks Lee . I'm also quite conscious that there is no point doing this unless its soundproof and I might add before some smart arse that is not because of my musical tastes .
