Argentina started a lot better than France, who seemed half asleep. Dembele was substituted b4 halftime before he did any more damage and Giroud (malheureux) went as well.

The French got going in the second half and gradually and methodically worked their way into the game. Mbappe was closely marked but he and the other substitutes injected some pace and commitment to the French play which saw them draw level after 90 mins.

Messi contributed to a breakaway goal to make it 3-2 and all over bar the shouting, or so we thought. MBappe got his hat trick with a pen and then the dreaded penalty shoot out.

An enthralling game and a worthy final.

Slight negatives were the Argentina timewasting when in front and the histrionics when tapped up by the opposition (shared between the 2 teams). There was a lot of deliberate stamping - its become quite an art..

I couldn't believe how poor France were in that first half, something was clearly up. Unusual to see tactical substitutions before half time but Deschamps had to do something and those two subs made a huge difference in the second half. I wonder whether Gareth Southgate would have been so decisive faced with the same dilemma?
