A while back I lurged recklessly into a thread about aquiring a Palmer.

Fast forward to today and things have changed somewhat.

We have now finally moved home and started the major renovation on Van Der Beek Towers. This will take us about 2 yrs and 30 grand to get it to the palacial levels that the missus demands. My last weeks have been taken up by removing doorframes, stripping walls and endless journeys to the dump.

The living room is about 55 sq m and is thankfully in a condition that we can wait for a bit.

Out of the budget we did want to set 6k aside for a Palmer but I did want to improve the vinyl front end.

So towards the end of this month I will be auditioning a Funk Firm LSD, a Rega and Avid deck, all fitted with a Dynavector 20x LOMC.

Let's see how that works out. If I like one, it will taken home straight away in exchange for hard cash...

Why did you pick those to audition? or more interestingly why did you decide not to audition many others?

Hi,

Interesting choices.

The place I can think of that does all these 3 decks is Analogue Seduction near Peterborough. Have fun.

Cripes, for a moment I thought you were selling a Palmer for a Funk and was going to ask why. Having read though, I see you didn't audition it.

Hmm, yes, that would be silly...

I have decided that I need some education first and moving from 500 to 2k level will give me a significant improvement. Or so one hopes....

The reason for the shortlist is laziness. Most tables will improve on the current situation. I have limited time and for now the house gets priority. A nice backdated bonus gives 2k without taking money out of the house fund and actually increasing that.

If any of you know a free plumber though, let us know cause then i can buy the Palmer!

Some qoutes are quite something!

I agree, acoustic solid looks great value, I have taken the plunge and bought one from Jack at BD Audio, a great guy to deal with, sometimes items are priced to see how much they can get away with, compare the Palmer deck with Acoustic Solid, as a prime example

But for entertainment value the top of the list is bobby davro in stocks, google watch it, think who else on tv would be next in line!

I have more news to come on this topic, once the week is over and I am one day into the weekend.

Some of it ain't that positive but I am giving parties an opportunity to rectify things before I state an opinion....

I'm not exactly sure what is made to higher tolerances on a Palmer than on an Acoustic Solid. The CNC machinery the Germans use pretty much nails the machining to microns Paul.

Smaller numbers yes I agree on that.

And sometimes things are more expensive because they are made in smaller numbers, from more expensive materials, to finer tolerances. Not everything in hifi is a conspiracy to defraud you.

Yes, maybe there should.

Though right now I might wish I sunk the money into a VPI or something.

This weekend will tell me if I made the right investment in staying with UK kit.

British engineering products like turntables surely must present better value on currency exchange and import costs alone. That you've got Notts Analogue and Michell, to name but two (opposing design) manufacturers with impeccable reputations and service, you'd need to have very specific needs not to buy British. Origin Live is another possibility from Southampton. Failing that, at the higher end, Europe is relatively local c.f. The States.
