I’ve just purchased a pair, and just wondered what peoples thoughts were. I’ve seen a few pages on mods.

In particular the balance between the mid/bass and tweeter?

Also noticed a heightened upper bass. Any experiences?

Use three as my rear and centre speakers for my A/V set up Harbeth Compact Monitors do the front left and right . The tweeter is the best thing about it and stacking them shows great improvements heard four per side stacked at the Wam Show . I think they sound far better than their budget price and do reasonable bass if you put them on the end of a powerful amplifier It all KSA50 worked well for me .

Cheers bud, interesting that you use them for av.

I’ve had a better response from bunging the ports, though probably not a long term solution. I think I’ll change the cap and the ferrite, and see what the change is. I’ve tried to look at a few crossover designs but two of them won’t load, and the Dennis Murphy design isn’t visible to me☹️

I didn’t change the crossover circuit, but I found the upper bass muddle is fixed if you upgrade the inductor to a air cored one, and the capacitor to a high quality polypropylene. I’ve documented what I’ve done in posts on this thread:

A good friend uses them with a AE1 metal bass driver instead of the rather poor one that comes with the speakers, transforms them into something a lot better. The tweeter is just too good for the cab and bass driver.

p.s. if you take out the tweeters with too much power, I have a number of spares!

That’s good to know!

I’m going to have a little mess around with them in the coming weeks, going to try some new caps and coils, though the decent 6.2uf seem to be a little thin on the ground…

I’m sorted with both components, found some hovlands and coils from years ago! both measure 6.15-6.18 and reduced two coils from 2 to 1mH 👍 8EC1F525-E2EE-4FF9-BE1B-7D4B78CB2A7B.jpeg

I personally find they sound best in a lot of cases, close to rear wall, maybe with some foam behind the tweeter. I blocked up the ports on mine and stuffed the boxes as full as I could. I changed the inductor to an air core in mine, and I think helped and the additional resistance probably helped the balance as well. I ran them with a sub. Very lovely.

Thanks bud.

I’m going to have a play around with wadding, I have some lambs wool to try.

I’ve got some air cores to yet connect. The main thing I found initially was the imbalance between the tweeter and the mid/bass. As well as the peak in the upper bass. I’ve started cleaning the tweeter components as they were quite dusty internally. Not sure how much of a difference this will make…

Made a few changes. Few pieces of lead on the sides some lambs wool new cap+coil. The only difference I can see so far is the mid bass is slightly more capable at higher volume. Still have the over egged bass around 60-80hz CD1EF25E-9CBF-49F6-A3A7-3233AB2D129B.jpeg 57C73E29-F195-4876-B7E4-A43A92F7D561.jpeg

You could try stuffing the ports with drinking straws.

Yeah I’ll try it when I get some.

I’ve just put them in my main listening room for a whirl. To be honest what they do do, they do pretty well. I’m just moving them back and forth to get the best of what they are on! image.jpg

I’ve just given the lx5 another listen and it looks like one of the coils has started knocking. I’ve looked at a few new driver variants on line, has anyone used any of these as replacements with positive report?

I have replaced my drivers and the rubber surrounds on the first replacement pair cracked after about a year and a half. I’m on my second replacement pair now and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they won’t fail in the same way.

the surrounds on mine are fine just getting coil noise on one side.

Id go for the hi-vi driver, but they cost more than the speakers did in the first place, £82 shipped from madisound
