good budget speakers for a small room or office

These look ordinary but sound pretty good. they were developed as a inexpensive small monitor. They can be a bit exposed at the top end but are very revealing. Work well in smaller spaces and with a small well built box they image really well.

These are not mine, but i have a pair the same. And they work really well with older Quad amps.

i recently listened to these against a set of Stirling LS 3/5a and they came off better than I was expecting. They did the big sound small speaker thing well but were not as smooth as the LS 3/5a. So not fatigue free, however they were probably more accurate. Like the 3/5A they are a great match with the Quad 405.

They are not giant killers or anything just better than the typical 150 box they competed with when new. Indeed I much prefer these to the Rega RS1 i had for a while.

The original LS1's were better, but go for more money. The originals have a different cabinet and a white/clear bass/mid unit.
