Hi folks. I'm new here but an old hand over on PFM. Basically I am downscaling my main speakers (Audiophysic Avanti mkIII) after a lot of, ahem, heated discussion with She Who Must Be Obeyed.
So, I'm looking for a small speaker which can give me many of the qualities of the Avantis whilst working close to a wall. Must look good, have a decent bass response (but not overblown) and be dynamic and with electrostatic-like speed. All of these things the Avanti has in heaps, and I would like to see if I can do better than my current 'stand-ins'.
I have a pair of AVI Pro Nine+ in yew finish, which I bought a couple of months ago. They are very good speakers in their own right, but simply outclassed by the Avantis.
Assuming I get my £4k for the Avantis (or at least £3.5k), I would like to put £2k of the proceeds into the bank and get a smaller speaker, preferably used and mint, which will be:
(a) good sounding;
(b) fast;
© good looking (no ugly boxes);
(d) available s/h within budget including GOOD stands.
In fairness, I could probably live quite happily with the Pro Nine+ speakers, as they do little wrong and their only sin is in sounding a bit less open and ultra-detailed as compared to the Avantis. Otherwise, they do bass well enough (though nowhere near as deep as the Avantis) to make me be able to live without a subwoofer.
HOWEVER, I want some ideas for alternatives that might be worth checking out.
My amp may or may not be an AVI Integrated (depending on some other matters) and it might be that a different amp:speaker combo would deliver what I'm after. I asked this on PFM and got some good ideas, so now it's time to see what you guys can come up with. When I get the Avantis sold, I'll know how much I can spend and see what I can do...
Cheers,
john
