Hi, as above, looking to possibly upgrade from my current AE1's (original) to hopefully improve bass..... may consider a subwoofer, but was looking into the possibility of changing speakers.

The Acoustic Energy reference series (1 or 2) caught my eye, and should be a wife pleaser too :) but I am mainly looking to improve sound quality and add a bit more lower frequency.....

Does anyone have any experience of this amp and some speaker recommendations for me?

thanks.

My HK amp worked brilliantly with Epos M15 floor standers. Plenty of base, plenty of energy, plenty of space. I'm not sure what the current equivalent speaker is.

The HK990 can auto-EQ a pair of subwoofers - might be worth trying to get a loan of a pair of small subs and see if you like the result, and keep your AE-1s which are a bit of a classic.

Thanks for all the great info guys..... definitely some ideas to go there! Appreciated.

Totally forgot about the 2 subs option  ..... and have a m8 who has 3 subs just sitting doing nothing at the moment!

Might have to try that avenue first, then work out my options from there.... would any sub do the job, or am I looking for something more specific?

i.e. work better with music?

**UPDATE**

Managed to get hold of a small Kef sub to try out...... all I can say is WOW, what a difference. It really helps by dropping them low frequencies.

I ran the EZ setup 1st just for equalisation in my system, then sat back and listened. Very subtle in the difference it makes, but it really adds those extra lows

particularly in more bass heavy tracks.

Now looking for a reasonable sub to partner with the AE1's.

What about Harbeths, l run mine with a Tripath amp and it sounds superb.
Yeah was considering Harbeths.... not sure which model to go for though.

Amp is rated at 150w/ch.

Any with that amount of wallop:^ :geek: .

My ickle Virtue Audio Sensation M451 or M901( tweaked;-) 40wpc) is a brilliant combo with my Compact 7ES2, so l am thinking your digital amp will also be.... but the golden rule is home demonstration, let us know how you get on. :)
