I've broken my golden rule of always listening prior to buying. Pah... who cares - it's not the hifi. I've ordered a pair of AKG Q701 cans because I fancy a pair for listening from the telly and radio occasionally, not the stereo but come to think of it the cd player has a headphone socket so maybe + I like green  .

Thing is they will probably need a kick up the arse via the sources mentioned so was wondering if there is a 'made in heaven' headamp pairing that'll cost less than £300 which is all I'm prepared to spend. Maybe Epiphany?. Open to suggestions which would be welcomed. DAC not needed as I won't be listening via pc.

I had the Epihany O2 amp and thought it was excellent for the price. It drove my Denon D7000s very well. Enough power to satisfy and a nice neutral sound signature.

I know use the Icon Audio HP8 Mk II... Well, it's a tube amp... And a bloody fantastic one at that.

I have an amp by NJC Audio (http://www.njc-audio.co.uk/) well worth a recomendation.
Looking inside the Reference Monitor II, you could say it's either full of foo or has nothing for the diyer to upgrade (because it's already full of foo - (my favourite foo parts too!)). Assuming the PSU is equally 'over the top', i'd imagine this amp could be very good.

Yes, you could say it's "Foo-kin' good" :)

I haven't taken mine apart as a) I have no interest in doing so and b) I wouldn't know how to upgrade it, even if it was upgradeable.

My late dad's tenet about cars (he was a mechanic) "they are like women - best left alone when they are allright" applies here IMO.

Yep. Decided that if a headamp is needed. This is what I'll get.
