Hi Markus,The Celestion BX12 4085 HS measures 100 dB/W before you put it in a horn.

There's obviously a limit to how low that sensitivity is maintained though!
Do you equalize for that or do you rely on room gain for linearity? I would guess that your horns stops being effective somewhere around 200 Hz?

Marcus you know I am daft, equalize? Room gain for linearity, is that like using placement to reinforce tha bass? Your servant,Keith.

You are not suggesting Murray would sully himself with something :- DIGITAL I hope!

Did I hear once of valve crossovers , I have been thinking about valves rather too much lately.

To a degree the vented rear chamber and the fact that they are in corners augments the low frequencies enough for me. I'm not applying any sort of electrical or digital eq.

North Thrumpton, ,
I understand Murray is using a Behringer for crossover and equalisation duties, and for some signal treatment. He has developed an algorithm to pre-condition the signal in such a way that the distortion his valve amps generate are cancelled. Feed-forward transfer function correction I believe he calls it. (Only joking, Murray.)

EDIT: Damn, Murray answered while I was follwing my whimsy.

Marchand do a valve crossover, I believe. Haven't seen one let alone listened to one so can't comment. Generally, if I was in your shoes, I'd try to find a single power amp I liked before thinking about multiple ones. Passive crossovers can go a long way, theses days, and your speakers are expensive enough that Ralph shouldn't have skimped on the crossover components.

I'd go along with that. Find one amp that does a reasonable job with what's there before delving into the world of active x-overs. I shouldn't think either the demo Alphas' you've heard or the Gamma's have had active networks yet you've been impressed enogh with what they can do.

Romy did mention a new amp recently which I believe contained 6 channels, 2 solid state for bass and 4 (2 per side) with 300B's & dedicated output transformers for mid & hf. Can't remember the make, think it was Canadian & not ludicrously expensive. Might be worth looking at.

PS that's about 40dB past my usual listening peaks

PPS 'Loud' has nothing whatsoever to do with 'good'...

location, location .
Speakers are 93dB (or maybe 94 - can't remember) driven by 18watts of big fat valve watts .... and then the pre needs to be attenuated by -14dB to keep it all sensible
