The answer is 10p per hour! According to my newly installed smart meter. So, its off for casual listening, & the lovely Ruark radio replaces it. Do we know how much it costs to run all our boxes? Well, I certainly didn't although of course I was vaguely aware.

When we had our new electricity box installed the guy asked what machines we were running in our home as the meter was moving quite fast. At the time it was just the HiFi non- class A amp but class A phono stage, Streamer etc etc. worried by this I turned off the HiFi and booted up the studio.

Despite having more than three times more individual items in the studio the studio used less electricity! Weird but I am glad that I had sold off all of my vintage gear and everything that I now own is current production but this does include analogue synths so not what I was expecting at all.

I wonder if anyone's worked out how much it costs to run their valve amps per hour including valve depreciation.

My multi amp setup takes 750 watt so approx 20p per hr. I’ve never smoked so I’m guessing that’s like three fags an hr - but much better for my health 😀

I ran some class d for a while, thinking i would save a fortune, but I didn't see it. Chickened out when some non related smps were so difficult to repair. Have to consider the wider picture too

this is hifi “tight ass” wam… I estimate if you had returned from a week after being aimlessly lost in the Mojave Desert without food or water you would farewell to get half pint of Websters Yorkshire Bitter, a toke on a john player special and a bite of Ploughman’s sandwich out of half of these lot 🥰

My Chord power amp runs almost completely in class A and consumes around 10 watts in standby and 30 watts when idling.

When I had a Class A amp, it used as much power when idling, as when running - which was over 400W - so 30W is great. There was no standby on mine.

I won't (or daren't) find out. With the 845, two valve preamps, two valve phono stages, a valve DAC and all-valve power supplies for them, I imagine it's a fair bit.

But I don't listen all day long, I don't smoke and I quit drinking years ago. It's one of my few pleasures and I refuse to feel guilty about it.

My DIY First Watt M2X class A amp consumes 160watts and the Pass ACA hooked up to my PC consumes around 60 watts. They are 25 wpc and 8 wpc respectively.
The 8 watter atually runs hotter than the 25 watter due to heat sink size.
The pre is also class A but I have no idea on consumption for that.
