Seeing a couple of threads (what happened to your system in 2013 and what are your plans for 2014) got me thinking:-

Stick yourself into a Tardis and jump forward 1000 years.

What will Hifi look like ?

What musical style will endure (Spice Girls ? Ode to Joy ? Beatles ?)

Will analogue exist apart from our ears ?

1000 years...

if we do not blow ourselves off this beautiful planet and survive, I wonder if people will not look back at history and say about now that "this was their finest hour"

What say you ?

Interesting question!

With the assumption that we manage to avoid a World war or pandemic, the world's population will be a lot bigger, so we'll be living in smaller homes, pushed together even more closely. As physics won't change in 1000 years, and unless building materials change radically, listening on loudspeakers will be even more restricted than today. Deep bass and loud will be a thing of the 20th century, not even the 21st let alone the 31st. However to offset that, direct injection into the brain bypassing the ears altogether may well be a reality. What I don't see changing is the human need to listen to music as this has been a feature of humanity for 5000 years or more, so I don't see that changing in a mere 1000.

As to Beatles or Beethoven, I think that both will be a specialist interest just like Palestrina is today and the pop music of the day, probably completely synthesised by whatever computing device then exist is much more likely to be the mass interest.

I would like immortality just to satisfy my curiosity for what will come after me. I really regret I won't see space travel become everyday, Human colonies on other planets, even leaving the solar system altogether. I won't find out what my grandchildren's children achieve in life, but then I won't be around to see the horrible effects of global warming if that's not controlled by technology, and the wars that might arise because of it.

What will be the 31st century equivalent of the carpet gripper debate?

Steepletone will become so successful they will buy up all other Hifi manufacturers, and Re-badge their products under the all encompassing Steepletone label.

And I suppose every car will be badged a Bentley?

Please do not invent bizarre fantasy scenarios that cheapen the Steepletone brand. Steepletone will never be for the masses. You can't afford one in 2013. You won't be able to afford one in 3013.

As for the original question, seriously, I would not be surprised if Steepletone is the only brand of today available in 1,000 years from now. Such is its enduring quality.

Profound.

In 1000 years, what would have replaced digital music ? Perhaps we will indeed have some sort of transplant to have instant access to whatever music we see fit.

I recall that in the early 70's, people would gather in houses to listen - as a group - to new music. The most notable example being Tubular Bells as it was so radically different. In the future, I can hardly imagine we will be as social as we are now. In fact, as I was on the train, plane and car today, I realised we spend increasing time staring at technology...

1000 years..... Will music even survive ?

Tbh in a 1000 years we won't even recognise ourselves or our world. The rate of change is so rapid. Amen. But music will always be here, in some way or another.

I think you are on the right track here Steve. At the rate technology is advancing, and assuming our species survives the millennium intact, I think the door to virtual reality, which is only ajar just now, will be swung wide open within the the next 10 to 20 years. I expect the tech to eventual allow full consciousness immersion and sensory perception to the point where we could enjoy a virtual life within a fully realized virtual world. Not just one world however, there will be many themed and stylized worlds created by teams of visual artists, be those artists human or artificial. I expect computers to be unrecognizable from todays clunky machines and will probably be seeded from custom genetically engineered DNA cultures. As these organic machines develop and grow they will be selected for ability and taught the skills which suit that particular 'sentient artificial lifeform', as that is what computers will become. Perhaps we will have discovered how to map and copy a living consciousness by then too, which opens even more possibilities. Want to go see Tristan Und Isolde at the Vienna State Opera? Easy, just upload into the appropriate virtual world and go experience the full performance 'live', without leaving your pod.

I've done a double blind test and Tesco's finest comes out on top every time, beating M&S, Sainsbury's and even Waitrose.
Now that ladies and gentleman is an excellent post, one of which we need more of on The Wam- duly repped Sir! :^

There won't be any Hifi in one thousand years time because...

In the year 2525, if man is still alive

If woman can survive, they may find

In the year 3014

Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie

Everything you think, do and say

Is in the pill you took today

In the year 3014

You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes

You won't find a thing to chew

Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 3014

Your arms hangin' limp at your sides

Your legs got nothin' to do

Some machine's doin' that for you

In the year 3014

Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife

You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too

From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 3014

If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then

Maybe He'll look around Himself and say

"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day"

In the year 3014

God is gonna shake His mighty head

He'll either say, "I'm pleased where man has been"

Or tear it down, and start again

In the year 3014

I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive

He's taken everything this old earth can give

And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been one thousand years, man has cried a billion tears

For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through

But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight

So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

With respect to Zager And Evans :geek:

Direct neural interfaces are much less than 1000 years away, perhaps less than 100 years.

In 1000 years it's for sure that having little boxes about the place will seem as useful as having an oxen to travel to town.
