Totally unsuited to today's world, but I have a massive soft spot for the 2CV.

They are brilliant, but don't get carried away. Build quality was appalling at best and the chassis rusted away faster than you could open the windows.

Rot boxes par excellance, but get past that and they are still fantastic fun to drive.

I agree. I had three, serially, the last of them brand new with the white body and blue wave decals down the side. Drove with the roof rolled back to Mull from near Maidenhead where I lived at the time, caught cuddies from the beach, pulled the front seats out of the 2CV and placed them on the sand, built a fire, cooked the fish and drank rather a lot of wine. I don't remember being any happier at any time in my life. It wasn't the 2CV that did it, but ya have to get around and doing it in slow style is cool. It kind of adds to the experience.

I can still recall my Mechanic mate's face as he looked under the bonnet of my (425 cc!) AK300 van.

But the engine was a work of art. Boxer twin, engineered so well that the cylinders needed no head gasket!

A customer-with BMW - once asked me what was under the bonnet of my Dyane. He couldn't keep up in City Centre.

Foot to floor and change on the fly, lean seriously into corners -- great fun!

Whilst staying at a hotel in Arras northern France we met a chap from southern England who was over racing his 2cv. We went to the racetrack the following day and had an entertaining afternoon. It was quite a site watching them lean over in the bends.
