ipad audio basics - help reqd!

I've got a funny feeling I'm only scratching at the surface of my iPads audio abilities and I'm also quite keen to try these FLAC hi Rez wav compressionless things that seem to be popular.

The only music on it just now is from iTunes.

I'm not that computer savvy so where do I start? I usually just connect the ipad to my hifi through a decent lead from the headphone socket and that seems to work fine.

I don't really have a question but any info,in simpletons terms, would be handy. If it makes a difference Mrs MallyMad has a laptop PC as well and we have a couple of drives with music on also which she can transfer to my  first gen iPod.(I still like it and no iTunes reqd)

Many thanks in advance not only for the help but for having patience also.

The iPad does not natively play FLACs, but there are apps that you can install that do. I use PlugPlayer or MediaConnect to play them from my uPnP server when I do not want to fire up the big rig.

I use J River to rip my cd's to a NAS drive and control playback through my hi fi with the J Remote app on my ipad. This way I can use flacs, As stated previously Apple do not support flacs. I also have itunes on my ipad as I have a lot of music in Apple lossless format too.
