Is £30 a decent price to bias and check over an amp?

Just what I was quoted from a local specialist - does this sound about right?

Seems pretty reasonable to me, I guess it'll be about n hour's work to check it out and adjust if necessary, etc.

Most businesses have a minimum charge for opening the lid - £30 equates to about 30mins work so cant really argue with the charge. many would charge £50 minimum.

Well my charge rate at work is £421 an hour, so £30 for many years' experience and training, the use of test equipment and an hour or so to open, test, adjust and close back up seems pretty cheap to me :^

Depending on what "check over" means it's either a perfectly reasonable deal or a very good deal. I'm assuming it's the AVC amp, in which case they'll get no help whatsoever from AVC. So they'll need to do a bit of background work to satisfy themselves over what the bias point should be. If "check over" means "take a quick look around for fraying wires, bulging capacitors, scorched resistors, the wrong fuses etc" then that's perfectly reasonable. If they're going to roll their sleeves up and start measuring voltages and currents, temperature rises, noise levels, distortion, impulse response etc and/or do a soak test then it's a very good deal. Just my two penn'orth (er, thirty quid's worth) of course.

Sorry Chris (OP), but stop doing the reinforcement of Scottish stereotypes.

£30? Are you fucking insane? Of course it's good value. Actually, I'd be more wanting to question what sort of 'specialist' charges so pathetically small an amount.

I'd charge about £120 to assess whether the initial charge was reasonable. And that would be bloody cheap.

Pay I before they wake up, but make sure you get some sort of guarantee. For that money, I'd expect total buggery.
