Hi I'm getting really into vinyl. I'm particularly enjoying buying second hand stuff really cheap and bring it back to life (usually £1 to £1.50). I have a cleaning process which i go through which most of the time gets rid of hiss, crackles, pops etc (I will not go into this process for fear of derision - but it seems to work.) I bought a v cheap copy of darkside of the moon that was almost unplayable before I got my hands on it (after cleaning there is very little background hiss etc, but it's still not perfect). The first 2 tracks of side one have a light scratch through them, causing a 'tick sound', for want of a better phrase. Is there any way I can minimise or eradicate this ticking.

I have a theory that the stoner who own the album before me was careless placing the needle on side one and was too wasted to turn the album over - hence side two is in better nick (hehe). I'm not looking to make the vinyl into a mint copy of darkside, but if there was a way of minimising the effect of the scratch (which does not make the needle skip, just causes ticking sound) I be really happy, as it would mean that i can delay buying the 30th anniversary edition at around £20.

cheers

Allan

Many years ago you could buy click suppressors. They worked from what I can remember by looking at the rise time of a click and filtering out anything that looked too fast to be musical content.

I haven't seen them advertised lately but who knows, they may still be around somewhere.

Pete.

I've heard of a technique using the lid of a bic biro. But I'd only recommend it as a last resort. You rub it along the groove where the scratch is a few times and it fills the gap.

Throw it away, if you are buying albums at £1.00 to £1.50 a time you can live with throwing away 50% let alone once in a blue moon.

There are millions (literally) of second hand copies of DSOTM, just get another one.

The most sensible suggestion.

The problem then comes that the new copy will also have a click, just somewhere else. With luck it mught be on one of the loud bits, so less noticeable, but the well know Law of Maximum Disbuggerance dictates that clicks will always appear in a quiet bit.

The only way to avoid the clicks is to make a recording of the LP, then edit out the click. If you're going to go to all that trouble, just buy the CD...........

I'm not overly worried about it. I just have a sense of achievement when i bring a below par piece of vinyl back to life. It might say something about my geeky personality, but I simply asked to further my knowledge of different options available to improve playback. I know for a certainty I will buy a better copy of darkside at some point.

I really couldn't be arsed with any of that, I don't really care if records are warped or cupped if they play well. if they don't they go back if new or in the bin if second hand.

I have bought some horrors from certain wammers which got played once and binned. Nr mint or ex+ my arse!

Ah. It comes around every once in a while - twice in a single posting if one is really lucky like now - but once again I feel the need to agree with Serge. Yes. Really. The last time this happened he told me to enjoy it. This time, I am loving it even more. Respect, oh East Anglian One! You speak da truth.
