Hi VC,

price seems a little high, also it doesnt look immaculate, a few chips near the drawer. I remember new they cost the equivalent of £600 back in late nineties. But perhaps prices were higher here in the UK. i bought the 5100Z CDP version of this and the DAC was not great but the transport was good. Soundwise it was quite rich but could also a bit hot at the top end. I remember that it went well with higher-end generous sounding DACs such as Theta, Sonic Frontiers etc, particularly those with the Pacific Microsonics HDCD DAC.

It is heavy, but part of that is due to big steel plates tacked on the inside. unless they served some shielding purpose, i think it was just to add mass. internal construction is rather untidy being a mass of components seemingly thrown together in a haphazard way. The remote was cheap and not very durable, so make sure it is included and functions fully.

Also make sure the lid drawer slides smoothly, some ham fisted repairers at TEAC made a such a mess of my one, the dealer gave me another one! The handle at the front edge of the drawer should not contact the chassis at the front, there should be a very small gap.

ok thanks, i was sharing this mainly because ive seen a few people say they are an excellent transport, but based on their launch price, id be tempted to debate the claim, even more so now.
