Is there any place that sells isopropyl over the shelf in quantities? I have tried all the usual suspects. Maplins,b&q and the likes with no success. I want to make my own record cleaning solution and i don't want to buy from fleebay if i can avoid it ... Thanks..

Try a chemist. I buy isopropyl alcohol for cleaning contacts etc from local chemists.

Check out local chemical suppliers. I have a local one that stocks 5ltr bottles for about £10.

A lot. My RCM uses 5ml per side, so 10ml per vinyl. So 500 records per bottle of mixture if accurate. Don't go daft with surfactant (wetting agent) though. You really don't need very much at all.

5lt IPA will make, when mixed, approx 25lt of fluid depending on the strength, enough to clean about 2.5K of LP's.

I was told that you cannot purchase from the chemists, something to do with being a banned substance?.Could be wrong of course.
I bought 500ml last week from my local pharmacy. I was asked if I was experienced in its use, told her I wanted it for cleaning records and she said that's what most people buy it for!

Never had a problem buying Isopropyl alcohol from a pharmacy.

It's not a banned substance, as it couldn't be sold on eBay if it was!

There is probably an age restriction for chemists, as it's a solvent. I've bought it from local chemists without any problem though. It has a number of uses, including general cleaning, so is quite widely available.

The last lot I bought from eBay because it was cheap.

Someone in the states tested some bought from eBay a while ago ( still looking for the article) and it had nearly all been diluted
Anyone else spot the inherent irony here?

Errrr, diluted with what? It's a solvent...

The biggest difference between pharmacy and supplier is price. I was asked loads of questions by the local chemists. All were less than helpful and mainly disinterested. A quick trip down to the local supplier, bingo. Sorted.

Maybe he meant it had been mixed with water prior to dispatch. So not pure. Or that's how I read it at least.
