My system is ideally suited to Jazz yet I only have one Jazz FM compilation album. No idea were to start in building a Jazz collection. I have Spotify playing through the DAC of my Pearl Lite so could investigate any suggestions. Any ideas?

Best wishes

Paul

This is close enough for Jazz and you get one of the all time great voices too.

Oliver Nelson : Blues And The Abstract Truth

Cannonball Adderley: Somthin' Else

Sonny Rollins: Way out West

Miles Davis: Kind Of Blue Etc, etc there is something of worth on most of his records. Also try the orchestral Jazz with Gil Evans: Sketches Of Spain/ Porgy and Bess/Miles Ahead

John Coltrane: My Favourite Things / Blue train / Africa Brass/Love Supreme etc, etc.

Bill Evans Trio: Everything they did!

Keith Jarrett :Standards vols 1and 2. Also try The Coln Concert

That'll get you started :)

Just don't follow Whizzkid too far down the rabbit hole, he listens to some really weird stuff he calls 'free form jazz' (sounds like a load of blokes tuning up to me!) :D

Surprised no one has mentioned this audiophile standard

You should start with Swing (Louis Jordan, Count Basie and Duke Ellington) and Bebop (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey (drums), Ben Webster and Miles Davis.

Watch out for the 'Blue Note' label.

After Miles Davis came Coltrane.

Then look to the album above depicted by Tel - Dave Brubeck.

Roughly thats a historical sequence.

After Coltrane Jazz went a bit 'wierd'...

In there in the beebop tradition you will find Cannonball Adderley - a fine player who can move.

Yep the Duke and Satchmo sounds good and I forgot to mention a great jazz pianist - Thelonius Monk eg., 'Monk's Music'.

I reckon OP has enough to be going on with but we know its going to keep comin...

Yeh, these will get you going just fine. Just add a bit of Mingus and you're sorted.

It's Koln by the way Ritchie, you don't find Keith Jarrett in Lancashire very often!

I would start at the radio , tape a few programmes and find things you like, I used to be a full time musician m shows and gigs, and a few people have asked me the same question , but I would also perhaps get to a local gig , and for recodings I would suggest start with early recordings, and work up say from 1920/30 big nad small bands , then link all the bands and players to find other material ,

hope you enjoy your new tunes, .

ecm record label can be very good , but often more modern , which is not a problem either way I would say, also look out Wynton Marsalis and his back recordings, . very good indeedn,

all the best
