Saw him last night at Sage Gateshead. I have to admit I’m not a massive fan and only went as a mate ended up with a spare ticket. It was decent enough but a lot of it simply reaffirmed my indifference to a lot of his music. The constant use of string bending really doesn’t appeal to me and much of the enjoyment was when it was minimal and creatively used rather than washing over absolutely everything. He is a masterful technician and demonstrated that very capably but overall not my cup of tea. What I would question is his inclusion of Johnny Depp in the band for several numbers. Honestly it was like some random busker brought on without any rehearsal, what on earth is he thinking - apparently he’s releasing an album with Depp soon.

Going to see him tomorrow in Manchester. I actually really like his playing style and the Ronnie Scott's recording is an utter masterpiece to my ears.

That said, I'm hoping that Mr Depp is otherwise engaged. If I wanted to see him, I'd have bought tickets to the sodding cinema.

The Ronnie Scott album is a brilliant recording but again most of it musically isn’t my cup of tea. I absolutely recognise the mastery of his craft and his worthy status as one of the ‘greats’. Depp should stick to acting.

Depp should stick to overacting. And that ponytail, cannot stand seeing blokes with ponytails or buns.

I dont like bending of any kind now, & that does include guitar playing funnily enough.
Would be very upset if Johnny Depp appeared too. He hasn't even released a new Pirate film ?
Hope you enjoy the show Richard & Johnny doesn't spoil it for you. A review perhaps ? ;)

Mixed bag in some ways. I like Jeff Beck's style and I've seen him more than a few times. He was as good as always and the band were excellent. Initially a little disappointed to see Vinnie Colaiuta not appearing on drums, as I think he's among the world's best. However, his replacement was a young looking girl who utterly smashed it. Amazing sense of timing and the ability to do the Colaiuta 'off-beat' stuff. A revelation.

The not quite so good stuff. Johhny Depp, in a nutshell. He wasn't bad as such. An interesting voice, more in the style of the 'singing poet', but frankly not in the same universe as Jeff Beck and the band. Didn't spoil it at all as far as I was concerned, and he didn't appear for a great deal of the show anyway. The other downside of him appearing was that a goodly proportion of audience members were obviously 'fans' and were so vocal with all the screaming and shouting that it felt like the Beatles in the 60s.

The bad stuff. The support act was Sharon Corr (as in, The Corrs). I don't know how to put this without being overly critical, so I just will be. She was awful. She came across with all the stage personality of a wilted lettuce and her set comprised a selection of the most boring and boringly portrayed songs I have ever heard. I went and jojned the queue for the gents halfway through, and to be honest it was far more entertaining.
