Very sad. Whatever one thinks of his music, he was one of the few contemporary composers to filter into public consciousness and take on a significance between the confines of classical music. Who else now occupies a similar prominence: Arvo Part?
His music is also a necessary as an antidote to a hedonistic and materialistic age.
Must admit I had never heard of him until I saw Channel4 news last night, will definitely be investigating his works further. The choral piece they played on the news feature was very good indeed.
A small ensemble from the BBC Singers performed Lamb right at the end of the Today programme on R4 the other morning. They sounded very exposed with those complex harmonies and it was such an unusual and delightful thing to here in that context.
