Judith Durham, an Australian folk music star and lead singer of The Seekers, has died, according to a statement from her record label. She was 79.
"After a brief stay in the Alfred Hospital, Judith was admitted to Palliative Care on Friday 5 August, where she passed away peacefully that evening. Her death was a result of complications from a long-standing chronic lung disease," Musicoast and Universal Music Australia said in a statement shared on the verified Facebook page for The Seekers.
"Our lives are changed forever losing our treasured lifelong friend and shining star. Her struggle was intense and heroic -- never complaining of her destiny and fully accepting its conclusion. Her magnificent musical legacy Keith, Bruce and I are so blessed to share," her former bandmates Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and Athol Guy added in the post.

Grew up with their music as my parents had it on all the time when I was small. When my dad died recently me and my brother got drunk together listening to a stream of their albums (many of which I have, largely in mono, tucked away somewhere). I used to have a few Seekers numbers in my busking set back in the late 70s/early80s..

I remember going to see their '25th anniversary tour' (their first get-together since breaking up) when I was living in Wellington, NZ, in the early 90s. I loved every minute but had dragged along a jazz bass-playing flatmate who insisted Athol Guy was miming. Bummer but perhaps unsurprising after all those years. Certainly most of the musicians playing were not on-stage, but it absolutely didn't matter.

JD was magnificent, everything you could have asked for on a nostalgia gig like that. RIP.

Worth noting that a number of their 'hits' were not folk tunes, but modern 'folk' influenced pop often written by Tom Springfield, brother of Dusty.

My Favorite Judith I remember how I loved her singing We shall not be moved, Morningtown ride too, I was working for Billy Butlin (Best Days Of My Life) one day a Welsh barbershop ensemble sat in the cafeteria and sung Morningtown ride . was fabulous . I thought Georgy Girl was Jim Dale only song. It turned out it wasn't. He had a hit with Kenny Lynch for the Small faces and Shal-la-la -la - le
