There are lots of pieces of equipment out there that perform superbly, have a justified reputation, and a price tag to match.

But what about the black sheep? Equipment that isn't normally rated, doesn't have a high price tag, yet punches far above its' price tag? I think we should be talking about equipment like this. If you do submit to this list, in the interests of fair play I'd like to suggest that it's equipment you're NOT currently trying to sell.

I'd like to start the ball rolling on this by submitting:

Thule PR350B a/v processor

Not at all awesome as an av processor, but as a stereo pre-amp, with built in DAC, very good indeed. Various prices during it's life ranging from $4000 down, available for £100-200. Most annoying thing - the mute only reduces the volume to 40% on the pre-upgraded firmware versions. Make sure you get one with a remote if you do purchase.

Micromega Logic CD Player

Available in GWO for £25 upwards, tired versions for £5 upwards - and rather lovely. Mostly grey imports with French buttons. A Phillips CD player remote control should work nicely, should yours not come with a remote. Unit is based on the Phillips CD350 (NOT the 350i), and uses the CDM 4/19 mechanism. This unit has a significant Achilles' heel in the shape of the drive cog for the drawer, available for about £10 from eBay. I'm unsure how much they were new - have seen a cost of £800 suggested on some websites!

Denon 2900 DVD Player

Handling pretty much every audio format going, this unit cost £800 when new, and they're out there from £50 upwards now. Rock solid transports, for a start, with battleship build quality. If only mine had been black, I'd not have sold it. And yes, I have turned into that much of a tart with regards to hi-fi colour. Use by itself as a stand-alone CD player, or later on with a DAC - but have a play with the onboard DAC settings first before going that route. Keep an eye out for the 3900 too.

I'm pretty sure the Micromega Logic was £450 when I started buying hifi, because I always lusted after one as the next step to my Marantz CD52mkII.

Sounds closer to reality than some of the things I've seen posted. Still a nice little CD player - when one of mine comes back from service I'm going to be case damping and a few other mods :D Got 2, one for me, one's now going to my parents with the Quad 77 integrated as the heart of a system. That's after it's used for back-to-back mod comparisons, of course :D

Behringer UCA 202. So long as you don't need more than 16/44 a great little USB dac and Spdif converter.. oh and headphone amp too!

for ~£20!

Yep, used to have one - and would second this. I lent mine to someone who then disappeared. Twunt. This thing is basically a swiss army knife for computer audio, and comes with a bucketload of free software too. Did you know Behringer do a USB to phono adapter for record players for about the £30 mark too?

Gotta be honest, the source in my second system is nothing other than a bog-standard Sony Blu-ray player. It sounds better than my previous Arcam DV79 DVD player which in turn sounded better than my old £600 Arcam Alpha 6. It makes some pretty good sounds through an AI Series 500 and a pair of Sonus Faber Signums.

I have had too much to list, that's been unfashionable...

Denon PMA-2000AE - Big 'Jap Crap' amp with all the power you will ever need, epic build but 'made by Denon who make AV amps and mini-systems....'

KEF 104/2 - Horrible* '80s boxy looks with super complicated crossover but soundstage, dynamics and good overall balance.

Various Sony ES amps (670ES/770ES) - Starting to become more sort after now...

Sony DVP-S900ES DVD/SACD - Its a DVD player right? But only 2-channel, and proper high end build and sounds great to me, prefer it to the VRDS 10SE I had before.

Possibly British Monitors like the Kord Tornado/Vulcan, Keesonic Kolt, ATC SCM10 etc.

*I actually quite like the looks myself

Another vote for the Behringer UCA-202. And one for the Pioneer DV-989, an excellent universal player.

Nice! Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray DVD player, launched at £250, now available from £40 upwards in GWO. For audiophiles on a budget, might be the very thing.

Lots of Sony ES stereo components. UCA-202. Denon DVD-2900. Sony BDP-S760. Spotify Premium £9.99 a month.

All of the above will drastically affect membership of the auidiophoolery club.

JVC JA-S11 from late 70s. If you pay more than a tenner you're being ripped off. Great sounding, rock solid amp for peanuts :^

I had one of these & subsequently got a 3910 which is a beast of a machine & a very good CD player too. Seems to play everything.

One on the bay at the moment for a ridiculously low price.

The JVC was my first amp. I had it paired with a Sansui SR222 and AR18s - it was a great sounding system that gave me a lot of pleasure. Happy days

How about this for unfashionable? My dad purchased (and then I eventually inherited) an old Realistic cassette deck, back when Tandy first opened in Andover back in about 1980 I think. Model SCT3100, it was a bit more upmarket than their usual shite - a 3-head model with all servo-controlled transport buttons, and a damped opening action on the mechanical tape door. Good old fashioned VU meters too, none of your fancy modern (and accurate!) LEDs or the like.

Thing is, with good calibration controls for both bias and level, a dual capstan transport and heads that could actually take some decent level without saturating, it used to turn out some pretty good results on TDK metal tapes. Probably not going to rival a Nak CR7 for wow & flutter, but a damn sight cheaper than one!

I made countless hundreds of recordings on that thing as a nipper, all those eighties mixtapes and Top-40 shows! Ah, those were the days...
