What a race! He had to win it 4 times, and no one got close.

What the heck are Honda up to though? Why did Rubens have to pit with only 78 laps to go? There just doesn;t seem to be any clear thinking happening when it comes to strategy, let alone putting together a usable car for JB and RB.

Any way, Lewis for world champion in his debut season? I think so.

glad Kubica was (relatively) OK, that looked really really nasty.

great drive from Hamilton though, nobody was on or close to his level

and how much did everyone enjoy seeing Tacu passing Alonso? :lmao:

Very impressed with his focus and concentration. Its one thing to drive quickly, another one to keep calm and smooth, despite all the elements conspiring to cause him problems and keep the entire field on more or less the same lap. I suppose that saved him the problem of dealing with back markers as I don't think there were any.

We all cheered when Tacuma passed Alonso. A great move and bloody hilarious.

i have to say, that was the most entertaining race so far, incident (Kubica crash), safety car (4 times), team accidents (wrong pitting time) two black flags (running the red pit light) and muck ups (davidson 'coming' in for his pit) all mixed in with some great overtaking (Sato passing Alonso along with Webber passing people)

and good to hear the national anthem after a long while at the end

Nothing but support for the lad, he's not cocky either as a person or driver, totally professional, doesn't drive like he wants to die (early Montoya anyone?), and is 100% British - hope he wins it this year and for many years to come

FWIW,I don't understand the anti-Alonso / Alonso-is-shite sentiment that's sprouted up. He clearly struggled on the soft tyres and had brake probs all race long. He's 2xWDC and been the best pound for pound driver for the last 2 or 3 years.

I just don't buy that Lewis is as good as Alonso. Yet.

I'll wait til the car is not well balanced and fast til I judge him......right now the Mac is like Hill's 1994 Williams.

EDIT: i do think he is fecking impressive though, notdoubting that.

not anti-Alonso, I just thought it was fanatsic to see a/the leading team's car get passed by a Super Aguri
biggrin.png

I'm sure Tacu's 'unpredictability'
wink.png
stopped Alonso defending against the move more aggressively tho - thought he could have held him off tbh.

Not you, Russ; the general tabloid-pack sentiment....step aside Alonso, and all that cock

Listen to the commentary: it's ace !

Wise words Craig and i fear its a perfect case of the press building up another hero only to kick the granny out of young Lewis when he comes unstuck. They're all his friends now:D . Alonso and Massa have one bad race thats all. Lewis does remind me of a young Shumacher though. Extremely confidant and focused which if he becomes a champion will then be seen as arrogance . The press are never happy;)

Good posts, Craig & Duvet.

WHY do Steve Rider and all the rest of the ITV crew have to fawn so horribly all over LH? He doesn't fucking need his ass licking, anyone with an eye and half a brain can see how shockingly good he is. Even the "specialist" mags are at it, boils my piss hugely.

Alonso is a superb driver but seems to be his own worst enemy right now. I think that this season will be his best chance to beat his teammate but he seems unnerved by Hamilton, far more than he ever was by MS. Can't be easy for a 2xWDC to be at least equalled by a newbie in the same car.

I don't think McLaren have handled their drivers at all well and, despite Ron's obsessive claims of total professionalism, haveindulged in far too much mawkish self congratulatory celebration of Hamilton, far too early in his career. There's plenty of time for it to come.

Jesus christ! He has been on the podium for his first 6 races. And won his 6th ever race in Formula 1. His team mate - the current champion- is nowhere near him. He is leading the championship by 8 points!

What more do you need to know? In what way is not the biggest story ever in fomula 1? how ridiculous would it be for Steve Rider and the ITV team to not make a huge fuss over this excellent driver and tghis fantastic story.

Mark my words, he will be better than Schumacher. Be happy about it. He's British.

Not a massive fan to be honest, he seems a bit of a robot, groomed from an early age by ron dennis, no charisma or style of his own, bit boring infact.

Dont get me wrong its nice to hear the national anthem again, but yesterday was the first time I'd watched F1 since Schumi quit, cant say as I'll be watching anymore.

Glad Kubica is ok(ish) that crash was worse than ratzenbergers and we know what happened to him, I reckon that helemt tether system probably saved him from a broken neck, look how exposed his feet were!!!! lucky to not lose them!!

You're totally missing the point. I can see how good he is. I don't need to be told by some know-nothing media nitwit. And, just because he's come along does NOT mean that the other drivers are automatically crap or yesterday's men. Its just tawdry, cheap, stupid and insulting to all involved and to the audience. The inevitable backlash will be even worse.

He's already better than Schumacher. Maybe not purely in terms of his driving (yet) but certainly in terms of character and sportsmanship.

Alonso is not "nowhere near him". He's very very close in terms of speed although not always in front.

F1 is not about "stories", its about speed. He has the speed and it speaks for itself. All the rest is hot air.

LH deserves support because he's good, not because he's British.

You must be watching a different broadcast to me. I now have no idea what you are on about. Backlash? Tawdry? Insulting? Lost me there somewhere mate. I am honestly clueless as to what you mean.

James - Jacques Villeneuve was 'on it' when he came in, Damon, frankly, was 'on it' in terms of pace, but even those two did not have a car (or knowledge of the team) that Lewis had. Alonso was mega in the Minardi, and so on.......nd that's only the last 10 years

As debuts goI don't question that it is a stellar performance. however, he has a car that is so beautifully balanced that he can concentrate on taking setups from across the garage, and going out and showing how undoubtedly HUGELY quick he is. All that is granted.

It's not that I, nor embee, doubt his speed but a well rounded F1 champ is not made overnight. When the car ain't so good and he has to drive round problem, when it's raining, when he has to race from the back of the grid, if and when alonso stops sharing data, and so on - all these wee factors will make it possible to judge whether he is the business.

Right now, IMHO, he is a blindingly quick and self-assured driver in a blindingly quick and balanced car. Only time will tell what comes next.......

There is always a backlash when the UK media put someone on a pedestal. He'll crash or screw up eventually and the wind will suddenly blow in the other direction. Happens all the time and it sucks.

Look at JV: Qualified on pole for his first ever F1 race and only finished second because Williams told him to slow down due to an oil leak. 4 wins, 11 podiums that year. Won the WDC in his second year. Been nowhere ever since. Firstly, LH's start has been very good but not uniquely good. Secondly, a good start does not guarantee anything.

The "journalism" surrounding LH has been utterly sycophantic. Saying that someone is "the greatest ever" after six races is just daft, see above. Do you think that there would be all this fuss if he wasn't a Brit?
